Position Overview:

We are seeking an experienced Mainframe System Programmer responsible for the installation, configuration, maintenance, and tuning of IBM z/OS systems and associated system-level components. This role is not application development-it is focused on the core operating system, supporting the infrastructure that runs critical business workloads. The ideal candidate is hands-on with IBM mainframe architecture, system utilities, and hardware configuration, and is comfortable working in high-availability production environments.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Install, configure, and maintain z/OS, z/VM, and system software components such as JES2, RACF, VTAM, and TCP/IP.
  • Perform system-level maintenance, apply PTFs/APARs via SMP/E, and handle system upgrades and IPLs.
  • Configure and support system automation tools, console automation, and workload schedulers (e.g., IBM TWS, CA-7).
  • Administer and troubleshoot mainframe storage systems, catalogs, DFSMS, and tape management tools.
  • Conduct system performance monitoring and tuning using tools like RMF, SMF, OMEGAMON, MainView, etc.
  • Manage mainframe security infrastructure (primarily RACF), implement policies, and assist with audits/compliance.
  • Provide technical support for mainframe hardware and software-related incidents; work with IBM and vendors for resolution.
  • Participate in disaster recovery planning and testing.
  • Document systems configurations and changes in accordance with ITIL/Change Management processes.
  • Support cross-functional teams including DBAs, network engineers, and operations to ensure a stable and secure mainframe environment.

Required Skills and Experience:

  • 11+ years of experience as a Mainframe System Programmer (z/OS).
  • Strong hands-on expertise with z/OS system internals, SMP/E, JCL, and ISPF.
  • Deep understanding of IBM mainframe hardware configuration (HCD/HCM), LPAR, IOCP/HCD, and PARMLIB.
  • Experience with mainframe automation, monitoring, and scheduling tools.
  • Proficient with RACF administration and overall mainframe security concepts.
  • Skilled in REXX, CLISTs, and scripting for system automation.
  • Familiarity with change management, problem management, and system documentation.
