Mainframe Migration Manager information

What does a mainframe migration manager do?

A Mainframe Migration Manager oversees the transition of legacy mainframe systems to modern computing environments, such as cloud platforms or distributed architectures. They are responsible for planning, coordinating, and executing migration projects, ensuring that data and applications are securely and efficiently transferred. These managers work closely with technical teams, stakeholders, and vendors to minimize risks, resolve challenges, and ensure business continuity throughout the migration process.

What are some common challenges faced by mainframe migration managers during legacy system transitions?

Mainframe Migration Managers often encounter challenges such as ensuring data integrity during transfers, minimizing downtime to avoid business disruption, and managing compatibility issues between old and new systems. Coordinating efforts across cross-functional teams—including developers, QA, and business stakeholders—requires strong communication and project management skills. Additionally, adapting to evolving project requirements and addressing resistance to change among end-users are frequent aspects of the role, making flexibility and stakeholder engagement crucial for successful migrations.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a mainframe migration manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Mainframe Migration Manager, you need expertise in mainframe systems, migration methodologies, and project management, typically backed by a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with tools like IBM z/OS, migration automation platforms, and certifications such as PMP or AWS Migration are often required. Strong leadership, problem-solving, and stakeholder communication skills set top candidates apart. These skills ensure seamless migration processes, minimize downtime, and maintain business continuity during complex transition projects.

Job description

Senior Data Migration Validation Analyst – Mainframe/SQL/Salesforce – $60-65/hr W2 – Phoenix (Hybrid, ~1 Day/Week Onsite)

Own data integrity on a high-stakes legacy-to-cloud migration.

A state agency is migrating from a legacy mainframe through SQL staging into Salesforce CRM, and needs a senior analyst to guarantee 100% data integrity across every hop: zero record loss, perfect relational mapping, clean reconciliation.

Why this role stands out:

  • $60-65/hr W2 depending on experience, 6-month contract starting early September
  • Hybrid, genuinely: onsite about once a week in central Phoenix
  • Senior-level ownership of validation strategy on a complex, visible migration

What you'll do: validate data at every migration hop (mainframe → SQL → Salesforce), record counts, hash totals, financial summaries · review Source-to-Target Mapping (STTM) documents and write complex SQL to verify transformation logic · validate Salesforce relational integrity post-load (SOQL, Data Loader, Workbench, External IDs, parent-child relationships) · triage defects (encoding issues, orphaned records, null violations) with Informatica ETL and Salesforce developers

Required: Bachelor's degree (CS, IS, Business, or related) · 5+ years with SQL Server, Salesforce Service Cloud, and data conversion testing/validation · advanced SQL (complex joins, CTEs, window functions, profiling) · Salesforce data architecture and SOQL fluency · legacy data literacy (fixed-width flat files, EBCDIC-to-ASCII validation) · Python/Pandas or advanced Excel/Power Query for automated cross-system comparison · AI experience a plus

The firm stuff: Phoenix-area residents only (current city on resume) · in-person interview within a week · start within two weeks of offer · HireRight background check and drug screening · W2 only, no C2C, no sponsorship · closes Wednesday, August 5 at 3:00 PM

Keywords: Data Migration, Data Validation, Data Conversion, ETL Testing, Mainframe Migration, EBCDIC, SQL Server, SOQL, Salesforce Data Loader, Workbench, Informatica, Python, Pandas, STTM, Data Reconciliation, QA Analyst, Phoenix, Hybrid, W2
