Job description

Position: Mainframe Developer (PD Tools Specialist)

Location: Remote

Duration: Long term contract

Summary:

  • We are looking for Senior Mainframe Developers with deep expertise in IBM Problem Determination (PD) Tools to support complex application debugging, performance tuning, and production issue analysis.
  • The ideal candidates will have a strong background in COBOL, JCL, DB2, and mainframe utilities, combined with hands-on experience using IBM’s PD Tools suite (Fault Analyzer, Debug Tool, APA, File Manager).
  • Key Responsibilities Diagnose and resolve abends using IBM Fault Analyzer, creating detailed findings and recommendations.
  • Perform source-level debugging with IBM Debug Tool for z/OS to resolve logic, data, and runtime issues.
  • Conduct performance analysis and tuning using IBM Application Performance Analyzer (APA).
  • Use IBM File Manager to analyze, browse, edit, and validate datasets (VSAM, QSAM, DB2).
  • Participate in root cause analysis, code remediation, and long-term fix strategy.
  • Support production and non-production environments, including batch and online (CICS) applications.
  • Troubleshoot system dumps, logs, job failures, and performance bottlenecks.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams (QA, operations, architects) throughout the SDLC.
  • Document technical findings, process improvements, and best practices.
  • Required Skills & Experience 10+ years of hands-on IBM Mainframe development experience.
  • Strong expertise in COBOL, JCL, VSAM, DB2, and utilities (IDCAMS, SORT, ISPF).

Proven experience with the following PD Tools:

  • IBM Fault Analyzer IBM Debug Tool IBM Application Performance Analyzer IBM File Manager In-depth understanding of common abends (S0C7, S0C4, Uxxxx codes) and dump analysis.
  • Experience supporting large-scale enterprise applications in production.
  • Strong debugging, analytical, and performance optimization skills.
