What is magnetic particle testing?

A Magnetic Particle Testing (MPT) job involves using magnetization techniques to detect surface and near-surface flaws in ferromagnetic materials. Technicians apply magnetic fields and ferrous particles to identify cracks, seams, or discontinuities in metals. This non-destructive testing (NDT) method is commonly used in industries like aerospace, manufacturing, and construction for quality control and safety inspections. MPT technicians must understand testing procedures, equipment operation, and safety protocols. Certification and experience are often required for advanced roles.

What does magnetic particle testing involve?

Professionals in Magnetic Particle Testing are responsible for preparing test surfaces, applying magnetic fields and particles, and carefully inspecting materials for surface and near-surface defects. Daily tasks also include documenting results, calibrating equipment, and ensuring compliance with industry safety standards. Many technicians work closely with quality assurance teams, engineers, and supervisors to coordinate inspections and report findings. The work often takes place in industrial environments such as manufacturing plants, construction sites, or maintenance facilities, requiring both independence and teamwork for successful results.

What skills and qualifications are needed for magnetic particle testing?

To thrive in Magnetic Particle Testing, a solid understanding of non-destructive testing (NDT) methods, attention to detail, and knowledge of industry safety standards are essential, often supported by relevant NDT certifications such as ASNT Level I or II. Familiarity with magnetic particle inspection equipment, UV lamps, and documentation systems is commonly required. Strong problem-solving skills, analytical thinking, and effective communication help set candidates apart. These skills ensure accurate flaw detection, safety compliance, and clear reporting in critical inspection environments.

How much do magnetic particle inspectors make?

Magnetic particle inspectors typically earn between $40,000 and $70,000 annually, depending on experience, certifications, and location. Skilled inspectors with certifications like ASNT Level II or III can earn higher wages, especially in industries such as aerospace, oil and gas, or manufacturing. Overtime and shift work may also increase overall compensation.
