Description
The Transmission Electrical Engineer will be responsible for the design of transmission electronics and software for military ground vehicles including tanks, howitzers, and infantry fighting vehicles. Projects will include the full scope of product development including research, design, prototyping, and testing of functional improvements. This engineer will report to the Manager of Transmission Engineering and will perform their job duties with the oversight of a Project Engineer.
Essential Functions:
  • Responsible for electrical systems design, analysis, integration, and performance evaluation in combat vehicle applications. This includes FPGA, PCB, harnesses, enclosures, controllers, sensors, motor/generators, inverters, and effectors.
  • Support development of hybrid power packs including designing, testing, and integrating the electrical components that combine internal combustion engines with electric propulsion, including battery packs, inverters, and electric motors.
  • Develop controller architecture design plans by researching, analyzing, selecting, and applying powertrain control engineering techniques and criteria. This involves circuit design including parameters, stability, bandwidth, noise, parasitic effects, impedances, high-frequency behavior, filters, and EMI compatibility.
  • Develop & release detailed design specifications including CAD models, schematics, and drawings for qualification and production release using Engineering Change Proposals (ECPs).
  • Work in a cross-functional environment including interfacing with program management, project engineering, test engineering, analysts, designers, and mechanical engineering. Also includes interfacing with customers and suppliers.
  • Compose design verification test plans that capture all performance data to assess new design requirements compliance. Oversee qualification activities including HIL/SIL, bench, dynamometer, and vehicle level testing.
  • Participate in root cause failure analysis investigations on electronic and electro-mechanical systems.
  • Analyzes electrical and software requirements to determine feasibility of design within time and cost constraints.
  • Prepares electrical design reports by collecting, analyzing, and summarizing data and trends.
  • Supports investigations involving the origination or modification of electronic components, firmware, or software specifications and requirements.
  • Maintain existing product design including support of technical data packaged (TDP), production and supply chain support.

Position Requirements
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor of Science (BS) in Electrical Engineering from an accredited university required with 2-8 years of relevant experience.
  • Ability to perform engineering calculations such as power analysis, wire gage and trace size, & Spice analysis.
  • General knowledge of electrical systems, circuit board design, harnesses, and components up to 1000V.
  • Knowledge of MIL-Standards, IEEE documentation, SAE specs, and IPC.
  • Skilled in the design of rigid and flex Printed Circuit Boards (PCB)
  • The ability to create and read schematics, assembly drawings and wire harness prints.
  • Schematic capture and PCB layout for multi-layer boards using Altium.
  • Problem solving and troubleshooting skills, including the ability to participate in or lead failure analysis investigations.
  • Ability to make technical decisions, complete assignments within budget and schedule, and work with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to manage and organize multiple project tasks to meet established deadlines, including tracking metrics and reporting status of engineering activities.
  • Excellent written and verbal communications.
  • Ability to utilize all Microsoft Office applications including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Project, and Visio.
  • Must be willing to travel (domestic and foreign) up to 10%.
  • Must be able to move freely, with or without reasonable accommodation, throughout a manufacturing environment.
  • Must be capable of obtaining a DOD security clearance if necessary for the program.

Preferred Additional Skills:
  • Previous experience with vehicle electric and/or hybrid electric powertrain components and concepts such as:
    • Permanent magnet motors/generators
    • High Voltage inverters/converters
    • Powertrain control systems
    • Integration into a vehicle and performance evaluation
  • MS in Electrical or Software Engineering (or other advanced degree).
  • Systems engineering experience.
  • Hybrid electric vehicle or powertrain experience.
  • Creo or other CAD modeling software experience.
  • Manufacturing or assembly line experience.
  • Fluent in German or French, or other languages.
  • Understanding of bill of materials and processes to develop them.
  • Root cause failure analysis training such as 6 sigma, 8D, Shainin Red X, etc.
  • Circuit card and harness design exposure including IPC training or certification.
  • Proficient in engineering software such as LTSpice, Vector CANalyzer/CANape, MATLAB Simulink, LabView.
  • Experience in an aerospace/military manufacturing environment with SMT, complex assembly, and product test.
