What is a magazine editorial and what does an editorial team do?

A magazine editorial refers to content created by the editorial team that reflects the magazine's voice, values, and perspectives, often including opinion pieces or commentary. The editorial team is responsible for planning, commissioning, writing, editing, and curating articles and visuals for each issue. Their work ensures the magazine maintains a consistent tone, meets publishing deadlines, and upholds journalistic standards. Editors also collaborate with writers, photographers, and designers to produce engaging and informative content for their audience.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in magazine editorial, and why are they important?

To thrive in Magazine Editorial, you need strong writing, editing, and content curation skills, often supported by a degree in journalism, communications, or English. Familiarity with content management systems (CMS), Adobe Creative Suite, and AP Style is typically required. Excellent communication, creativity, and attention to detail are crucial soft skills that set standout editors apart. These skills ensure high-quality, engaging content and smooth collaboration within editorial teams to meet publication standards and deadlines.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals in magazine editorial roles, and how can they be effectively managed?

Magazine editorial professionals often encounter tight deadlines, balancing creative vision with commercial considerations, and coordinating input from multiple contributors. Managing these challenges requires strong organizational skills, effective communication, and adaptability. Building close relationships with writers, designers, and advertisers can help streamline workflows, while staying up-to-date with industry trends ensures content remains relevant and engaging. Prioritizing tasks and using editorial calendars are essential strategies for meeting publication schedules and maintaining high-quality output.

Job description

Great salespeople don't just sell products. They sell ideas. They solve problems. They create opportunities.

At Mpls.St.Paul Magazine, we believe great salespeople sell themselves before they sell our products.

We're looking for someone who is naturally curious, competitive, creative, and motivated by helping businesses grow. Someone who enjoys opening doors, asking smart questions, developing relationships, and building marketing strategies that clients can't wait to say yes to.

If you're looking for a job where you simply sell advertising, this probably isn't the right fit.

If you're excited about becoming a trusted marketing advisor, creating customized solutions, and building long-term client partnerships, we'd love to meet you.

Who We Are

Mpls.St.Paul Magazine is one of Minnesota's most recognized local media brands. But we're much more than a magazine.

We help businesses grow through an integrated portfolio of trusted media and marketing solutions, including:

  • Award-winning print publications
  • Marketing services
  • Digital advertising
  • Branded content
  • Social media
  • Video
  • Live events
  • Email marketing
  • Custom marketing programs
  • First-party audience solutions

Every recommendation we make is built around one question:

"What does this client need to accomplish?"

Then we build the right solution.

What You'll Do

As a Marketing Solutions Sales Executive, you'll help businesses throughout the Twin Cities achieve their marketing goals through creative, customized solutions.

You'll:

  • Develop new business opportunities through strategic prospecting, networking, referrals, and relationship building.
  • Meet with business owners and marketing leaders to understand their business, challenges, and growth objectives.
  • Design integrated marketing strategies that combine print, digital, branded content, events, social media, video, and custom solutions.
  • Present ideas that solve business problems instead of simply selling advertising.
  • Build lasting partnerships by delivering measurable results and exceptional client experiences.
  • Manage an active sales pipeline and consistently exceed revenue goals.
  • Collaborate with award-winning creative, editorial, digital, marketing, and events teams to bring ideas to life.
  • Stay curious about marketing trends, consumer behavior, and new ways to help clients succeed.

Who Thrives Here

Our most successful consultants tend to be people who:

  • Love to win.
  • Don’t wait for opportunities. They create them.
  • Are comfortable picking up the phone and asking for meetings.
  • Ask great questions before presenting solutions.
  • See rejection as part of success.
  • Want their income to reflect their performance.

Media sales experience is helpful, but it isn't required.

If you've succeeded in consultative sales, business development, marketing, technology, SaaS, financial services, staffing, healthcare, or another relationship-driven industry, we'd love to hear from you.

Why Join Us?

You'll represent one of Minnesota's most respected media brands while selling a portfolio unlike anything else in the local market.

You'll have the opportunity to:

  • Build relationships with influential business leaders across the Twin Cities.
  • Sell integrated marketing solutions instead of one-size-fits-all products.
  • Work alongside award-winning editorial, creative, digital, and events teams.
  • Bring your own ideas and help shape the future of a growing media company.
  • Receive ongoing coaching, collaboration, and professional development.
  • Build a career with significant income potential and room to grow.

Compensation

This is a performance-driven sales position. Success comes from building relationship, prospecting consistently, creative opportunities, and helping clients grow.

Expected first-year earnings typically range from $75,000 to $125,000, including base salary and commission. Our commission plan rewards performance with uncapped earning potential

Benefits

We offer a competitive benefits package including:

  • Medical, dental, and vision insurance
  • 401(k) with company match
  • Paid time off and holidays
  • Professional development opportunities
  • Flexible work environment
  • Collaborative and supportive team culture

Candidates should be residents of Minnesota.

Our Hiring Process

We're intentionally looking for people who put thought and effort into earning opportunities.

Along with your resume, we'd like you to answer the following three questions:

1. Why Mpls.St.Paul Magazine?

What about our company or this opportunity interests you?

2. Tell us about a piece of new business you're most proud of winning.

What made it challenging? How did you earn the client's business?

3. Sell yourself.

Imagine we're a prospective client and you're asking us to invest in hiring you.

Convince us why you're the person we should meet.

No generic cover letter. No AI-generated buzzwords. Just your best sales pitch. Because that's what this job is all about.

If this sounds exciting, we'd love to hear from you.
