AspectMachinist WorkCNC Operator
CredentialsHigh school diploma, technical training, certifications in machiningHigh school diploma, technical training, CNC programming certifications
Work EnvironmentMachine shops, manufacturing plants, workshopsManufacturing facilities, machine shops, production lines
Job ResponsibilitiesSet up, operate, and maintain manual or CNC machines; interpret blueprintsOperate CNC machines based on programmed instructions; monitor machine operation

Machinists and CNC operators often work in similar environments and require technical certifications. While machinists focus on manual and CNC machine setup and maintenance, CNC operators primarily run programmed machines. Both roles are essential in manufacturing, but machinists typically have broader responsibilities in machine setup and troubleshooting.

Is a machinist a good paying job?

Machinists typically earn competitive wages that vary by experience, location, and industry. According to industry data, the median annual salary for machinists is around $45,000 to $55,000, with experienced workers and those with specialized skills earning higher pay. Certifications and proficiency with CNC machines can also influence earning potential.

Is machinist a difficult job?

Machinist work can be challenging as it requires precision, technical skills, and knowledge of machining tools and measurements. It often involves working with complex equipment, reading blueprints, and maintaining safety standards, which can be demanding for some individuals. However, with proper training and experience, many find it a manageable and rewarding profession.

What kind of work do machinists do?

Machinists operate machine tools such as lathes, mills, and grinders to produce precision metal parts and components. They read technical drawings, set up equipment, and ensure parts meet specifications, often working in manufacturing or workshop environments. Skills in measurement, blueprint reading, and safety procedures are essential for the role.
