Job description

Position Overview

A&E Machine Shop, Inc. is seeking an experienced CNC Machinist / Programmer to join our machining team.

This is not an operator-only position. Candidates must have hands-on experience programming CNC machines in addition to setting up and operating them.

The ideal candidate will be capable of taking a machining job from blueprint to finished component, including determining the machining process, programming the CNC machine, setting up tooling and work holding, establishing speeds and feeds, operating the machine, troubleshooting, and inspecting the finished work.

We are looking for an experienced, hands-on machinist who can work independently and confidently program CNC mills and/or lathes to produce accurate, high-quality work.

Key Responsibilities

  • Program CNC mills and/or lathes for machining operations
  • Create CNC programs from blueprints, drawings, and job specifications
  • Write, enter, edit, and troubleshoot CNC programs
  • Set up and operate CNC machines
  • Read and understand G-code and make programming changes as necessary
  • Determine machining sequences and appropriate methods for completing jobs
  • Select appropriate tooling, inserts, work holding, speeds, and feeds
  • Establish work offsets and tool offsets
  • Perform complete machine setups for new jobs
  • Prove out new programs and verify safe machine operation
  • Troubleshoot programming, setup, tooling, and machining problems
  • Optimize programs and machining processes when appropriate
  • Read and interpret blueprints, technical drawings, dimensions, tolerances, and specifications
  • Machine components to required dimensions and tolerances
  • Inspect completed and in-process work using calipers, micrometers, gauges, and other precision measuring instruments
  • Make necessary programming or machine adjustments to maintain accuracy and quality
  • Perform routine machine maintenance and report mechanical issues
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area
  • Work independently while collaborating with the machining and fabrication teams

Required Qualifications

  • Previous hands-on CNC programming experience is required
  • Must be able to program CNC machines — not just operate existing programs
  • Experience setting up and operating CNC mills and/or lathes
  • Strong understanding of G-code and CNC programming fundamentals
  • Ability to create and modify CNC programs based on blueprints and job requirements
  • Ability to perform machine setups independently
  • Ability to determine tooling, work holding, speeds, feeds, offsets, and machining sequences
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints and technical drawings
  • Understanding of dimensions, tolerances, and machining specifications
  • Proficiency with calipers, micrometers, gauges, and other precision measuring instruments
  • Strong shop math skills
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and troubleshooting abilities
  • Ability to work independently and solve machining problems
  • Dependable, punctual, and safety-conscious

Preferred Experience

  • 2+ years of CNC machining and programming experience
  • Experience with HAAS, Mazak, FANUC, or similar CNC controls
  • Experience programming both CNC mills and CNC lathes
  • CAD/CAM programming experience
  • SolidWorks experience
  • Manual machining experience
  • Industrial or job-shop machining experience
  • Experience with custom, repair, or one-off machining work
  • Welding and fabrication knowledge is a plus
  • Forklift experience or certification is a plus

What We're Looking For

We are specifically looking for a machinist who knows how to program CNC equipment, not someone whose experience is limited to loading parts, pressing cycle start, or operating programs created by another programmer.

A qualified candidate should be comfortable receiving a blueprint or job specification and determining how to approach the machining process, including programming, setup, tooling, work holding, machining, troubleshooting, and inspection.

Candidates should be prepared to discuss their previous CNC programming experience during the interview process.
