What is a machinist inspector?

A Machinist Inspector is a skilled professional responsible for examining and measuring machined parts to ensure they meet precise engineering specifications and quality standards. They use specialized tools and instruments such as calipers, micrometers, and gauges to verify dimensions and tolerances. Machinist Inspectors play a critical role in manufacturing by ensuring products are accurate and free from defects before they move to the next stage of production or shipment. Their work helps maintain quality control and compliance with industry regulations.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a machinist inspector?

To excel as a Machinist Inspector, you need strong mechanical aptitude, precision measurement skills, and experience with quality control procedures, often supported by a technical diploma or apprenticeship. Familiarity with inspection tools such as micrometers, calipers, coordinate measuring machines (CMM), and industry standards like ISO 9001 is typically required. Attention to detail, analytical thinking, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for identifying defects and coordinating with production teams. These capabilities ensure components meet strict specifications, uphold safety standards, and maintain efficient manufacturing processes.

What are some common challenges faced by machinist inspectors during quality control processes?

Machinist Inspectors often face the challenge of maintaining precision and consistency across large production runs, especially when working with tight tolerances. They must remain vigilant for subtle defects or measurement deviations and be prepared to troubleshoot root causes, which requires a thorough understanding of both machinery and quality standards. Additionally, balancing time constraints with the need for meticulous inspections can be demanding, and effective communication with machinists and engineers is essential to address and resolve any quality issues promptly.

What is the difference between Machinist Inspector vs Machinist?

AspectMachinist InspectorMachinist
CertificationsOften requires inspection certifications and technical trainingRequires machining certifications or technical training
Work EnvironmentInspection areas, quality control labs, manufacturing plantsMachine shops, manufacturing floors, industrial settings
Job FocusInspecting and verifying machined parts for quality and specificationsOperating and setting up machines to produce parts

CNC Machinist
Position Overview
We are seeking a skilled CNC Machinist to program, set up, and operate CNC mills and lathes to produce precision, complex parts. The role supports product development and production for high-reliability industries (including medical devices), ensuring parts meet tight tolerances, GD&T callouts, and applicable ISO quality standards. The ideal candidate is experienced with multi-axis equipment, CAM/GCode programming, specialty alloys, and continuous process improvement.
Key Responsibilities

  • Program CNC machines using CAM software (Mastercam, Fusion 360) and edit or write GCode for mills and lathes.
  • Set up and operate 3, 4 and 5axis CNC mills and multiaxis lathes (Fanuc, Haas and similar controls).
  • Produce complex parts from stainless steel, titanium, cobalt chrome, aluminum, steel and other specialty alloys to precise tolerances.
  • Read and interpret engineering drawings and GD&T callouts; verify critical dimensions using precision measuring tools and CMM inspection as required.
  • Perform first article inspections, inprocess checks, and final inspections to ensure parts meet specifications and document results.
  • Collaborate with engineers and product development teams to optimize part designs for manufacturability and cost effective machining strategies.
  • Troubleshoot machining issues, adjust tooling and programs, and implement corrective actions to maintain quality and throughput.
  • Maintain machine setup sheets, tooling lists, work instructions and production documentation in compliance with ISO requirements (ISO 13485 preferred).
  • Perform routine maintenance and preventive care on CNC equipment to ensure safe, reliable operation.
  • Apply Lean Manufacturing principles to reduce cycle time, scrap and tooling costs while improving efficiency and part quality.

Qualifications

  • 3+ years of handson CNC machining experience; experience with both mills and lathes required.
  • Proven experience programming and operating 3, 4 and 5axis CNC equipment and multiaxis machines.
  • Proficiency with CAM systems (Mastercam, Fusion 360 or equivalent) and strong working knowledge of GCode.
  • Solid understanding of GD&T, blueprint reading and precision machining practices.
  • Experience machining stainless steel, titanium, cobalt chrome, aluminum, steel and other specialty alloys.
  • Familiarity with Fanuc and Haas control platforms and machine setup procedures.
  • Experience in medical device manufacturing and knowledge of ISO 13485 or other regulated quality systems is highly desirable.
  • Strong CNC machine setup skills, fixturing knowledge and tooling selection experience.
  • Handson experience with inspection tools (micrometers, calipers, height gauges) and CMM or other metrology equipment.
  • Working knowledge of CAD, troubleshooting, process optimization and Lean Manufacturing techniques.
  • Effective communication skills, attention to detail, and the ability to collaborate across engineering and production teams.
  • Relevant technical education or machining certification preferred (vocational diploma, associate degree, or journeyman credential).

Benefits

  • Precision machining
  • Medical, aerospace, and defense work
  • Modern equipment
  • High-impact projects
  • Direct access to leadership
  • Growth opportunities in a specialized shop
