What is a machinist inspector?

A Machinist Inspector is a skilled professional responsible for examining and measuring machined parts to ensure they meet precise engineering specifications and quality standards. They use specialized tools and instruments such as calipers, micrometers, and gauges to verify dimensions and tolerances. Machinist Inspectors play a critical role in manufacturing by ensuring products are accurate and free from defects before they move to the next stage of production or shipment. Their work helps maintain quality control and compliance with industry regulations.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a machinist inspector?

To excel as a Machinist Inspector, you need strong mechanical aptitude, precision measurement skills, and experience with quality control procedures, often supported by a technical diploma or apprenticeship. Familiarity with inspection tools such as micrometers, calipers, coordinate measuring machines (CMM), and industry standards like ISO 9001 is typically required. Attention to detail, analytical thinking, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for identifying defects and coordinating with production teams. These capabilities ensure components meet strict specifications, uphold safety standards, and maintain efficient manufacturing processes.

What are some common challenges faced by machinist inspectors during quality control processes?

Machinist Inspectors often face the challenge of maintaining precision and consistency across large production runs, especially when working with tight tolerances. They must remain vigilant for subtle defects or measurement deviations and be prepared to troubleshoot root causes, which requires a thorough understanding of both machinery and quality standards. Additionally, balancing time constraints with the need for meticulous inspections can be demanding, and effective communication with machinists and engineers is essential to address and resolve any quality issues promptly.

What is the difference between Machinist Inspector vs Machinist?

AspectMachinist InspectorMachinist
CertificationsOften requires inspection certifications and technical trainingRequires machining certifications or technical training

Machinist Technician

Location: Fort Lauderdale, FL
Pay Range: $30–$39 per hour (based on experience)

Role Overview

MSHS Pacific Power Group is seeking a highly skilled Machinist who thrives in a technically structured, hands-on environment and takes ownership of precision work from start to finish. This role is ideal for an individual who values accuracy, consistency, and technical excellence, and who can apply independent judgment while working within clearly defined processes, standards, and specifications.

The successful candidate will be analytical, detail-focused, and comfortable spending extended periods working independently on complex machining tasks. While the work is systematic and routine in nature, it requires decisiveness, strong technical reasoning, and the ability to respond effectively when variables or disruptions arise.

What You’ll Be Responsible For
  • Perform precision machining, reconditioning, and fabrication of engine and mechanical components in accordance with manufacturer specifications and MSHS ISO standards
  • Set up, adjust, and operate machine tools including lathes, vertical/horizontal/universal milling machines, drill presses, and surface grinders
  • Calculate and hold tight tolerances (±0.01 mm) using precision measuring instruments such as micrometers, bore gauges, and dial indicators
  • Interpret blueprints, technical drawings, and engineering documentation to determine machining methods and sequences
  • Manufacture and modify specialized tooling to support unique machining applications
  • Inspect completed components for accuracy, defects, and conformance to specifications
  • Monitor feed rates, speeds, and machining conditions to ensure quality and consistency
  • Perform metalizing, valve seat work, honing, hardness testing, magnaflux, and dye penetrant inspections as required
  • Support occasional off-site or onboard machining work using portable shop equipment
  • Maintain machine shop equipment, tooling, and work areas in proper operating condition
  • Complete required measurement sheets, inspection documentation, and technical records accurately and on time
  • Work extended hours or overtime as needed to support operational demands
What Makes You a Strong Fit
  • You are analytical, methodical, and precise, with a strong preference for structured, hands-on technical work
  • You are comfortable working independently for long periods while maintaining focus and accuracy
  • You communicate in a direct, factual, and straightforward manner
  • You value routine, consistency, and clearly defined processes, while remaining capable of adjusting when disruptions occur
  • You take pride in craftsmanship, adherence to standards, and completing work correctly the first time
  • You demonstrate mental stamina and sustained concentration in a demanding machine shop environment
Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Advanced ability to read and interpret technical drawings in standard and metric measurements
  • Strong understanding of mechanical and hydraulic systems, engines, auxiliary systems, and related equipment
  • Proficiency in operating machine shop equipment safely and effectively
  • Knowledge of welding, brazing, and metalizing processes
  • Expert-level use of precision measurement tools and inspection methods
  • Ability to fabricate and modify tooling to meet specialized job requirements
  • Working knowledge of basic computer applications (Microsoft Office, internet)
  • Strong mathematical ability, including metric and standard tolerances
  • Logical problem-solving skills and technical reasoning
  • Ability to read, write, and comprehend technical documentation in English
  • Dependable, self-directed, and able to work with minimal supervision
Education & Experience
  • Minimum 5 years of machining experience or closely related field
  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • Technical or vocational training in machining preferred
  • Basic welding experience, including gas, arc, TIG, and MIG welding, is preferred.

Work Environment & Physical Requirements
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds
  • Ability to stand for extended periods and work in physically demanding positions (kneeling, stooping, twisting)
  • Willingness to work in confined or uncomfortable spaces
  • Ability to work outdoors and onboard vessels as required
Compensation & Benefits
  • Hourly wage range of $30–$39 per hour, based on experience
  • Comprehensive benefits package including medical, dental, and vision insurance
  • 401(k) with company match
  • Paid time off and paid holidays
  • Pet Insurance
  • Life insurance, AD&D, short-term and long-term disability coverage
  • Opportunities for continued technical training and professional development
