What is a machinist entry?

Machinist Entry jobs are positions designed for individuals who are new to the machining field, often requiring little to no prior experience. Entry-level machinists assist with operating, setting up, and maintaining machine tools such as lathes, mills, and grinders to fabricate metal parts. They typically work under the supervision of experienced machinists, learning how to read blueprints, measure materials, and use precision tools. These jobs are a great starting point for building a career in manufacturing or industrial production and often offer on-the-job training.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a machinist entry?

To thrive as a Machinist Entry, you need a basic understanding of machining processes, blueprint reading, and math skills, usually supported by a high school diploma or completion of a vocational training program. Familiarity with CNC machines, measurement tools like calipers and micrometers, and safety protocols is typically required. Attention to detail, problem-solving ability, and a strong work ethic are important soft skills in this role. These competencies ensure precision manufacturing, maintain safety standards, and support quality production in a manufacturing environment.

What are some common challenges faced by entry-level machinists, and how can they overcome them?

Entry-level machinists often face challenges such as mastering the operation of various machine tools, understanding technical drawings, and maintaining precision under tight deadlines. To overcome these obstacles, it's important to seek guidance from experienced team members, ask questions, and take advantage of any available training programs. Consistent practice, attention to detail, and a willingness to learn from mistakes can help new machinists build confidence and proficiency in their role.

Are machinists still in demand?

Machinists are still in demand due to ongoing manufacturing, aerospace, and industrial needs that require precision machining skills. The profession often requires knowledge of CNC machines and technical certifications, and employment opportunities are expected to grow steadily in many regions.

Can you be a machinist entry with no experience?

Entry-level machinist positions often do not require prior experience, as employers typically provide on-the-job training and may look for candidates with basic technical skills or a high school diploma. Having knowledge of machining tools, safety procedures, and the ability to learn quickly can improve chances of starting in this role.

What is the starting pay for a machinist entry?

The starting pay for an entry-level machinist typically ranges from $15 to $20 per hour, depending on location, industry, and the complexity of the work. Some employers may offer additional benefits or training opportunities for new hires.

Job description

About Smithey Ironware
At Smithey Ironware, we're building the next great American cookware company - one rooted in craftsmanship, quality, and enduring design. As a privately owned and fast-growing brand, we take a long-term approach to growth and decision-making. We believe exceptional products come from thoughtful work, high standards, and people who care deeply about what they do. Our team is united by a commitment to excellence, continuous improvement, and creating cookware that will be trusted and enjoyed for generations to come.
About the role
We're looking for a hands-on, detail-oriented Machinist with 1 - 4 years of experience to join our growing manufacturing team. This is an entry to mid-level opportunity to build on your foundation in precision machining and take on greater responsibility in a production environment where quality is the standard we hold ourselves to every day.
At Smithey, we make cookware that lasts a lifetime. That same commitment to craftsmanship extends to how we make it. You'll work independently and collaboratively with our manufacturing team, solving problems, honing your skills, and taking ownership of your part of the process.
This isn't a role for someone looking to clock in and coast. We're looking for someone who shows up ready to learn, takes ownership of their work, and understands that the part they produce is part of something bigger.
You Might Be a Great Fit If...
  • You've completed a machining, manufacturing, or skilled trades program and are ready to put it to work
  • You're the kind of person who takes pride in precision - close enough isn't good enough for you
  • You're a natural teammate who pitches in, communicates clearly, and doesn't wait to be told twice
  • You're eager to learn from experienced machinists and grow your skillset over time
  • You take safety seriously and follow protocols without being reminded
  • You're reliable, consistent, and ready to show what you can do
What You'll Do...
Machine Operation
  • Set up, operate, and adjust CNC turning centers and related machinery with minimal supervision and troubleshoot basic issues
  • Proficiency reading blueprints, work orders, and technical drawings; ability to interpret tolerances and specifications
  • Competence with precision measuring instruments (micrometers, calipers, dial indicators, etc.)
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality over speed
  • Clear communication with team members; ability to flag issues early and contribute ideas
  • Reliable, self-directed, and able to work independently with minimal oversight
  • Safety-conscious mindset; commitment to following protocols and modeling safe practices
  • Ability to stand for extended periods and lift up to 50 lbs regularly
  • Manual dexterity and visual acuity for precision work and inspection
  • Follow established production sequences to meet daily output and quality targets

Quality & Inspection
  • Perform in-process checks using precision measuring instruments including micrometers, calipers, and dial indicators
  • Inspect finished parts against dimensional tolerances and surface finish requirements
  • Flag non-conforming parts and report issues to higher-level staff promptly
  • Accurately document inspection results and production data

Maintenance & Safety
  • Conduct routine machine cleaning and basic preventive maintenance after each production run
  • Follow all shop safety protocols and PPE requirements at all times
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area
  • Report any equipment issues or safety concerns immediately

Team & Growth
  • Work collaboratively with the production team to meet daily output goals
  • Participate in training and skills development activities
  • Receive coaching and mentoring from senior machinists
  • Contribute ideas for improving workflow, quality, and efficiency over time
Qualifications
Required
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Completion of a machining, manufacturing technology, or skilled trades vocational program (DCCTC or similar)
  • 1-4 years of experience operating CNC or manual machining equipment in a production, job shop, or vocational training environment
  • Demonstrated proficiency in CNC machine operation, setup, and basic troubleshooting
  • Ability to read and interpret basic blueprints and work instructions
  • OSHA 10 certification or willingness to obtain upon hire
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality
  • Ability to stand for extended periods and lift up to 50lbs
  • Manual dexterity and visual acuity to inspect and measure parts
  • Ability to tolerate variable temperatures

Preferred
  • NIMS certification (one or more credentials)
  • Hands-on experience with lathes, mills, or CNC equipment through coursework or training
  • Basic familiarity with precision measuring instruments
Personal Qualities
  • Eager to learn and open to coaching
  • Reliable and consistent - you show up, you follow through
  • Detail-oriented with a low tolerance for "close enough"
  • Collaborative and communicative in a team environment
  • Safety-conscious without being reminded
  • Takes pride in the work, not just the paycheck
Compensation and Benefits
  • Hourly range: $19.50 - $24.50, based on experience, plus OT depending on business needs
  • 401(k)
  • 10 Days PTO
  • 8 Paid Company Holidays per year, plus 2 floating holidays
  • Health Insurance
  • Dental
  • Vision
  • Disability and Group Life Insurance
  • FMLA Leave
  • Bereavement Leave
  • Military Leave
  • Worker's Comp Coverage
  • 100% Company paid Wellness & Language Learning Programs
  • Employee Discount
  • Charitable Giving match
Shift Schedule - All Shifts Available
  • 1st Shift: 6:00 AM - 2:00 PM
  • 2nd Shift: 2:00 PM - 10:00 PM
  • 3rd Shift: 10:00 PM - 6:00 AM
