What is machining assembly?

Machining assembly refers to the process of putting together components that have been shaped or finished using machining operations, such as cutting, drilling, or milling. Workers in machining assembly often read blueprints and use specialized tools to fit, fasten, and test parts to ensure they meet quality standards. This job is essential in manufacturing industries, especially in sectors like automotive, aerospace, and industrial equipment. Attention to detail, mechanical aptitude, and the ability to use precision measuring instruments are important skills for success in machining assembly.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a machining assembly technician?

To thrive as a Machining Assembly Technician, you need a solid understanding of mechanical assembly, blueprint reading, and basic machining principles, often supported by a high school diploma or technical certification. Familiarity with CNC machines, hand and power tools, and quality control systems is typically required. Attention to detail, problem-solving, and effective teamwork are standout soft skills in this role. These abilities ensure precise assembly, minimize errors, and contribute to efficient production in manufacturing environments.

What are some common challenges faced in a machining assembly role, and how can new hires prepare for them?

In a Machining Assembly position, common challenges include maintaining high precision while assembling complex components, adapting to varying production schedules, and troubleshooting equipment issues quickly. New hires can prepare by sharpening their attention to detail, familiarizing themselves with standard operating procedures, and staying proactive in learning about the machinery they will use. Collaborating effectively with team members and seeking guidance from experienced colleagues can also help overcome initial hurdles and ensure a smooth transition into the role.

Senior Industrial Maintenance Technician
Poclain Hydraulics - [Sturtevant/Yorkville], Wisconsin
Advanced Industrial Maintenance Role - Manufacturing Environment
Poclain Hydraulics is seeking an experienced Senior Industrial Maintenance Technician to support our hydraulic motor manufacturing operations. This is not an entry-level maintenance position. We are looking for a highly skilled industrial maintenance professional with extensive hands-on experience troubleshooting and repairing complex manufacturing equipment in a heavy industrial environment.
Our facility includes CNC machining, assembly, heat treat, paint, and materials operations. The ideal candidate has a strong industrial maintenance background supporting production-critical manufacturing equipment and thrives in a fast-paced manufacturing environment where uptime, reliability, and responsiveness are essential.
What You'll Do
  • Troubleshoot, diagnose, and repair complex industrial manufacturing equipment and systems
  • Support CNC machining centers, lathes, grinders, assembly equipment, heat treat furnaces, paint systems, conveyors, and facility infrastructure
  • Perform advanced troubleshooting on:
    • Mechanical systems
    • Industrial electrical systems
    • PLC-controlled equipment
    • Hydraulic and pneumatic systems
    • Servo motors, drives, sensors, and controls
  • Execute preventive and predictive maintenance activities to minimize downtime and improve equipment reliability
  • Lead or support machine rebuilds, upgrades, installations, and continuous improvement projects
  • Utilize CMMS systems to manage work orders, document repairs, and track maintenance activity
  • Perform root cause analysis and implement corrective actions to prevent recurring failures
  • Support emergency equipment repairs in a production-driven environment
  • Maintain safe work practices including lockout/tagout and OSHA compliance
  • Provide technical guidance and mentorship to less experienced maintenance personnel
Required Experience & Qualifications
Strong Industrial Maintenance Experience Required
  • Minimum 7-10 years of industrial maintenance experience in a manufacturing or heavy industrial environment
  • Demonstrated experience maintaining and repairing production equipment in an industrial manufacturing facility
  • Extensive troubleshooting experience with:

    • Hydraulic and pneumatic systems
    • PLC-controlled equipment
    • Automated manufacturing equipment
  • Ability to read and interpret:
    • Electrical schematics
    • Hydraulic and pneumatic diagrams
    • Mechanical drawings and technical manuals
  • Strong understanding of industrial maintenance best practices and equipment reliability principles
  • Experience performing equipment rebuilds, installations, and major repairs
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision in a fast-paced manufacturing environment
Preferred Qualifications
  • Associate degree or technical certification in Industrial Maintenance, Electro-Mechanical Technology, Electrical Maintenance, or related field
  • Experience with vacuum heat treat systems or furnace equipment
  • Welding and fabrication experience
  • Experience in lean manufacturing or continuous improvement environments
What Sets This Role Apart
This position is heavily focused on true industrial maintenance work in a manufacturing environment - not facilities-only maintenance. The successful candidate must be comfortable troubleshooting complex production equipment under real manufacturing demands where downtime directly impacts operations.
Why Join Poclain?
  • Stable global manufacturing company with a strong U.S. presence
  • Advanced manufacturing environment with diverse industrial equipment and technologies
  • Opportunity to directly impact plant performance and reliability
  • Competitive compensation and benefits
  • Overtime opportunities available
  • Team-oriented environment focused on operational excellence and continuous improvement
Work Environment & Physical Requirements
This position works in a manufacturing environment with exposure to moving machinery, industrial noise, heat, oils, lubricants, chemicals, and electrical systems.
The role regularly requires standing, walking, bending, climbing, lifting, and using tools and diagnostic equipment. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable qualified individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions of the position.
