Machine Vision Software Engineer information

What does a machine vision software engineer do?

A Machine Vision Software Engineer designs, develops, and maintains software systems that enable computers to interpret and process visual information from the real world. They work with cameras, sensors, and advanced algorithms to automate tasks such as inspection, identification, measurement, and guidance in industrial and robotics applications. Their responsibilities often include integrating hardware with software, optimizing image processing algorithms, and ensuring the accuracy and reliability of vision systems. These engineers play a crucial role in industries like manufacturing, automotive, healthcare, and logistics where automated visual inspection and analysis are essential.

What are some of the main challenges machine vision software engineers face when integrating vision systems into manufacturing environments?

Machine Vision Software Engineers often encounter challenges such as ensuring reliable image capture despite varying lighting conditions and accommodating different types of defects or product variations. Integrating vision systems with existing automation hardware and production lines can require close collaboration with mechanical, electrical, and process engineers. Additionally, optimizing algorithms for real-time performance while maintaining high accuracy is a frequent necessity. Continuous testing and iterative development are key to addressing these challenges and delivering robust solutions in dynamic manufacturing settings.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a machine vision software engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Machine Vision Software Engineer, you need a solid background in computer science, image processing, and mathematics, usually backed by a relevant degree. Familiarity with programming languages such as Python or C++, machine vision libraries like OpenCV, and experience with deep learning frameworks are typically required. Strong problem-solving, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help engineers design robust solutions and collaborate with multidisciplinary teams. These competencies are crucial for developing accurate, efficient vision systems that meet real-world automation and quality control demands.

What is the difference between Machine Vision Software Engineer vs Computer Vision Engineer?

The Leonardo DRS Naval Power Systems business is a trusted provider of innovative naval gas and hybrid power systems, control technology and support solutions for the U.S. Navy and navies around the world.
Job Summary
We are seeking an Embedded Software Engineer with 2 to 5 years' experience to support sustaining engineering activities for existing embedded products and systems. This role focuses on maintaining, improving, troubleshooting, and updating deployed or production-released embedded software to ensure continued performance, reliability, security, and manufacturability.
The ideal candidate will work cross-functionally with systems, hardware, test, manufacturing, quality, field service, and program teams to investigate issues, implement corrective actions, support product updates, and sustain software throughout the product lifecycle.
What You Will Do
  • Support sustaining engineering efforts for released embedded products, including defect investigation, root cause analysis, corrective actions, and software updates.
  • Analyze and resolve software issues discovered in production, integration, test, fielded systems, or customer environments.
  • Develop, modify, test, and maintain embedded software in support of product reliability, obsolescence management, component changes, and manufacturing improvements.
  • Review problem reports, failure data, and test results to identify trends and recommend solutions.
  • Collaborate with hardware, systems, quality, manufacturing, and field support teams to diagnose complex technical issues.
  • Support software configuration management, version control, and release processes for maintenance builds and patches.
  • Assist with verification of bug fixes, engineering change requests, and product change notices.
  • Document software design updates, implementation details, troubleshooting results, and test evidence.
  • Participate in failure review boards, change control boards, and peer reviews.
  • Support root cause and corrective action efforts related to customer returns, field issues, and production anomalies.
  • Ensure software changes comply with internal development processes, quality standards, and applicable regulatory or contractual requirements.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement of sustaining engineering workflows, tools, and technical documentation.

Education & Experience Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Engineering, Software Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or related technical field.
  • Experience in embedded software development using C and/or C++.
  • Experience debugging embedded systems in lab, integration, manufacturing, or field support environments.
  • Familiarity with microcontrollers, processors, device interfaces, and real-time or bare-metal embedded systems.
  • Experience with software troubleshooting, root cause analysis, and corrective action implementation.
  • Experience using version control and configuration management tools.
  • Ability to read and interpret software requirements, interface definitions, schematics, and test procedures.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in a cross-functional engineering environment.

U.S. Citizenship required. This position may require an active DOD security clearance or the ability to obtain such clearance within a reasonable time after commencement of employment.
