What is a machine shop specialist?

Machine Shop Specialists are skilled tradespeople who operate, maintain, and oversee the use of various machines such as lathes, mills, and grinders to fabricate or repair metal parts. They read blueprints, set up equipment, and ensure precision in creating components for different industries, including manufacturing, automotive, and aerospace. Their expertise includes selecting the right materials, programming CNC machines, and adhering to safety and quality standards. Machine Shop Specialists play a crucial role in producing parts that meet exact specifications and are essential for the functioning of complex equipment.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a machine shop specialist?

To thrive as a Machine Shop Specialist, you need strong mechanical aptitude, precision machining skills, and a background in manufacturing processes, often gained through technical training or an associate degree. Familiarity with CNC machines, CAD/CAM software, and inspection tools is commonly required, along with relevant safety certifications. Attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and effective teamwork distinguish top performers in this role. These skills are crucial for producing high-quality parts, maintaining safety standards, and ensuring efficient shop operations.

What are some common challenges machine shop specialists face when working with tight tolerances and complex parts?

Machine Shop Specialists often encounter challenges when fabricating parts that require extremely tight tolerances or intricate geometries. Maintaining precision while compensating for tool wear, material inconsistencies, and machine calibration demands keen attention to detail and proactive problem-solving. Collaborating closely with engineers and quality control teams is essential to ensure specifications are met, and regularly updating skills to operate advanced CNC machinery can help overcome these challenges. Adapting to new materials and evolving manufacturing technologies also plays a significant role in meeting production and quality standards.

We design, manufacture, and supply tooling across the foundation industry — micropile casing, threaded reinforcing bar, small- and large-diameter drilling tools and accessories — backed by U.S.-based manufacturing, advanced fabrication and machining, and a longstanding reputation for quality, reliability, and responsive service.

Locations Wilkes-Barre, PA; Brookville, PA; Kilgore, TX; Houston, TX

Why join us

  • Industry leader with a proven track record and market-leading capabilities.
  • Stability and growth from the combined strength of three legacy companies and expanding U.S.-based manufacturing.
  • Competitive pay and benefits designed to attract and retain top talent.
  • Career growth across engineering, fabrication, operations, and field support with opportunities to advance as the company scales.
  • Comprehensive support including hands-on training, technical resources, and a collaborative team focused on long-term project success.

Position Summary

We are seeking a hands-on Industrial Shop Support Technician to support machining and fabrication operations in a heavy industrial environment. This role is part of the company’s Tiger Team, providing rapid-response technical support, equipment implementation, and process improvement assistance across multiple facilities.

The position supports CNC machining, manual and robotic welding, plasma cutting, plate rolling, equipment installation, and maintenance activities. This is a shop-floor role focused on mechanical and technical execution, not office-based work. Regular travel to other facilities is required for process implementation and operational review.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support installation, relocation, leveling, and alignment of CNC machines, welding cells, plasma tables, and fabrication equipment
  • Assist with troubleshooting and minor repair of CNC lathes and mills
  • Support manual and robotic welding operations, including setup and fixture adjustments
  • Assist plasma cutting and plate rolling operations as needed
  • Perform mechanical maintenance, troubleshooting, and corrective repairs
  • Support production recovery and process improvement efforts
  • Read and interpret blueprints, drawings, and technical documentation
  • Travel to other facilities to assist with equipment rollouts, implementation, and operational reviews
  • Evaluate processes and ensure proper alignment with company-wide manufacturing standards
  • Establish methods of developing process efficiency
  • Maintain clean, safe, and organized work areas
Requirements:

Qualifications

  • Experience in manufacturing, fabrication, machining, or industrial maintenance preferred
  • Familiarity with CNC machining equipment (lathe and mill environments preferred)
  • Exposure to welding or robotic welding systems preferred
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and troubleshooting ability
  • Ability to safely use hand tools, power tools, and shop equipment
  • Ability to read technical drawings and instructions
  • Willingness to travel regularly and adapt to changing priorities
  • Reliable, safety-conscious, and team-oriented
  • Ability to travel ~15%

Work Environment

Heavy manufacturing and fabrication shop environment involving CNC machinery, welding operations, plasma cutting systems, large plate rolling equipment, and material handling equipment. This is a physically active role requiring standing, lifting, and hands-on mechanical work, along with periodic travel to support other facilities.
