Job description

SUMMARY: The Machinist will set up and operate a variety of machine tools to produce precision tool and die parts for a multitude of projects and equipment throughout the plant. Machine tools include but are not limited to Mills and Lathes (Manual and CNC), Surface Grinders, Drill Presses, Band Saws, etc. Must be the site leader in living and driving the Company Core Values and High-Performance Work Culture.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Perform all machine shop operations such as, but not limited to, lathe work, drilling, grinding, milling, shaping and hand tool work
  • Repair and overhaul of manufacturing equipment in all manufacturing departments
  • Design and build manufacturing systems and equipment as needed
  • Set up procedures to conform finished tooling to desired specifications
  • Develop specifications from general descriptions and draw sketches of parts or products
  • Assist Tooling Engineer and Engineering Manager in the development of new tooling, new systems, and new production machines
  • Assist in designing dies and line tooling for new and existing products
  • Assist in the maintenance and up-keep of all machine shop equipment, as well as make recommendations to management for replacement or upgrade of shop equipment
  • Assist in the training of other personnel in the machine shop
  • Stay up to date on current machining and production technologies and recommend these technologies to management
  • Contribute in establishing safe use of machinery in the machine shop and throughout the plant
  • Operate all machine shop equipment to fabricate assigned projects and parts
  • Assist in trouble-shooting equipment in plant and for customers
  • Install new equipment throughout the plant: including adjustments, repairs and operator/mechanical training
  • Check the quality of products and take steps to correct any problems
  • Assist the slitting, press room and can line departments in set-up, repair machinery as needed, and sharpening of tooling
  • Utilize precision measuring devices, such as micrometers, calipers, and indicators as required
  • Produce machine parts to within two-ten thousandths of an inch
  • Calculate, through mathematics, the proper equipment that is required for a project, such as gears, pulleys, belts, air lines, etc
  • Additional duties could include welding, brazing, plumbing, and carpentry
  • All other duties as assigned

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: This position has no supervisory responsibilities.
QUALIFICATIONS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. Successful accomplishment of duties and responsibilities requires the following:
  • Knowledge of all manufacturing equipment and tooling. They can fabricate dies and tooling, set-up, adjust, repair, operate, and maintain equipment
  • Able to study blueprints, sketches, drawings, manuals, specifications, and sample parts to determine dimensions and tolerance of finished work piece to assure the needs of production and customers

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE: High School Diploma or general education degree (GED); three to six months related experience and/or training with completion of 8,000 hours Machinist Apprenticeship training to attain Journeyman Machinist papers as required by company or similar training as received elsewhere; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
LANGUAGE SKILLS: Ability to read, write, and comprehend technical instructions, drawings, and manuals. Ability to read and write short correspondence and memos in English. Have the ability to analyze technical procedures. This position also requires the ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Must have the ability to compute rate, ratio, and percentage and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
REASONING ABLILITY: Ability to define problems by collecting data to establish facts and draw valid conclusions. Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS: Valid Journeyman Machinist certifications.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, use hands and fingers; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel crouch, or crawl; and hear. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
WORK ENVIRONMENT: While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts, heat, electrical parts, fumes, airborne particles, and vibrations. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
