Welder/Fabricator


Reports to: Shop Manager

General Summary of the Position

Using a variety of processes, this role is to carry out skilled fabrication and welding work including inspection, planning, preparation and cutting, and checking / testing to fabricate, repair, maintain and install metal items, whilst performing the allocated tasks to meet safety standards, targets, set criteria and deadlines and to maximize productivity and profitability.

Essential Functions

    1. Material handling and storage; heavy lifting (50 lbs.), pushing, pulling, bending, squatting, walking, forward/above shoulder reaching and balancing for long periods of time and perform strenuous physical labor primarily indoors and occasionally under non-environmentally controlled shop conditions.
    2. Lays out, positions and secures parts and assemblies according to specifications, using straightedge, combination square, calipers and ruler.
    3. Cuts workpiece using CNC machine, powered saws, hand shears or chipping knife.
    4. Recognize, set-up and operate tools and equipment for tack-welds or welds components and assemblies, using electric, gas, arc or other welding equipment in flat, vertical or overhead positions.
    5. Work with in precise limits and standards of accuracy.
    6. Inspects grooves, angles or gap allowances using micrometer, caliper and precision measuring instruments.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

    1. Knowledge of design techniques, tools and standards involved in production of precision technical plans, blueprints, drawings and models.
    2. Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio and percent and to read and interpret metal rule. Recognize the importance of being exact or accurate.
    3. Ability to safely operate fabrication and machine shop machinery and equipment.
    4. Recognize, set up and operate hand and power tools common to the welding trade.
    5. Locate and mark workpiece bending and cutting lines, allowing for stock thickness, machine and welding shrinkage and other component specifications.
    6. Ability to safely move parts into position, manually or with hoists or cranes.
    7. Align and fit parts according to specifications, using jacks, turnbuckles, wedges, drift pins, pry bars and hammers.
    8. Ability to weldseparately or in combination, using aluminum, stainless steel, cast iron and other alloys.
    9. Skilled mechanically and able to inspect and perform minor machine maintenance such as oiling machines, dies or workpieces. Perform burning work.
    10. Ability to understand, follow and transmit written and oral instructions in English for efficiency in cooperative work assignments, to follow and promote safe work practices, and prepare and submit consistent, accurate reports and time keeping.
    11. Ability to work independently and as part of a team to complete daily activities according to work schedules.
    12. Maintain a clean shop; pick up/care for/store all tools, equipment and machinery and secure shop each day in order to eliminate potential hazards.
    13. Load or unload bundles, equipment or materials to/from trucks; move bundles, equipment or materials to storage or work areas using material handling equipment.
    14. Ensure that proper safety and incident reporting procedures are followed.
    15. Ability to meet attendance schedule with dependability and consistency.
    16. Performs other duties as assigned.

Education, Training and Experience

    1. Willingness and ability to perform manual work following verbal and written instructions.

Work Context

    1. Regularly works near moving mechanical parts and in shop conditions that include heat and humidity. Occasionally exposed to risk of electric shock.
    2. Must be able to lift, push, pull or carry objects, use abdominal and lower back muscles to provide support over time without fatigue. (Occasionally lift 80 lbs., frequently lift 50 lbs.)
    3. Requires good manual dexterity (hand, hand with arm, two hands) and multi-limb coordination.
    4. Wear common protective or safety equipment such as safety shoes, glasses, gloves and hearing protection.
    5. Must be able to quickly move arms and legs.
