What is a machine safety engineer?

Machine Safety Engineers are professionals who specialize in ensuring that machinery and industrial equipment operate safely and comply with relevant safety standards and regulations. They assess risks, design and implement safety systems, and conduct inspections and audits to prevent accidents and injuries in the workplace. Their work often involves collaborating with design, maintenance, and operations teams to identify potential hazards and develop solutions that minimize risk while maintaining productivity.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a machine safety engineer?

To thrive as a Machine Safety Engineer, you need expertise in engineering principles, risk assessment, and safety standards such as ISO 13849 or IEC 62061, typically supported by a degree in engineering or a related field. Familiarity with safety analysis tools, programmable logic controllers (PLCs), and certifications like TÜV Functional Safety Engineer is commonly required. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication skills are crucial for collaborating with multidisciplinary teams and ensuring compliance. These skills and qualifications are essential for designing safe machinery, preventing workplace accidents, and meeting regulatory requirements.

What are some common challenges faced by machine safety engineers when implementing new safety protocols in manufacturing environments?

Machine Safety Engineers often encounter challenges such as resistance to change from operators, integrating safety solutions with legacy machinery, and ensuring compliance with ever-evolving safety regulations. Balancing productivity goals with rigorous safety standards can require creative problem-solving and strong communication skills. Collaborating with production teams, maintenance staff, and management is key to successfully implementing new protocols, as it helps ensure buy-in and proper training across all levels.

What is the difference between Machine Safety Engineer vs Safety Technician?

AspectMachine Safety EngineerSafety Technician
CertificationsOSHA 30/ OSHA 500, CSP, or equivalentOSHA 10/ OSHA 30, safety-specific certifications
Work EnvironmentDesigning safety protocols, risk assessments, and compliance in manufacturing or industrial settingsImplementing safety procedures, inspections, and incident investigations on-site
Employer & Industry UsageManufacturing, industrial plants, engineering firmsFactories, construction sites, industrial facilities

While both roles focus on workplace safety, Machine Safety Engineers primarily design safety systems and ensure compliance during the development phase, whereas Safety Technicians implement safety measures and conduct inspections on the ground. Both roles are essential for maintaining a safe work environment in industrial settings.

Are safety engineers in demand?

Safety engineers, including machine safety engineers, are in high demand across industries such as manufacturing, construction, and energy due to increasing safety regulations and the need to prevent workplace accidents. They often require knowledge of safety standards, risk assessment, and safety management systems, making their skills valuable in ensuring compliance and protecting workers.

Job description

As a Hardware Development Engineer II on the Amazon Robotics team, you will design, develop, validate, and sustain electromechanical hardware for robotic systems deployed at scale in fulfillment centers. You will own component-level design through full product lifecycle - from concept and prototyping through volume production and field support. You will work with an interdisciplinary team of mechanical, electrical, controls, software, perception and manufacturing engineers to deliver robust, cost-effective hardware that meets the demands of 24/7 fulfillment operations.

This role requires a hands-on engineer who exhibits thorough engineering analysis and cradle-to-grave ownership of their designs. You will balance new product introduction (NPI) development work with keep-the-lights-on (KTLO) sustaining engineering responsibilities for fielded systems.
Key job responsibilities
Product Design & Development
- Work with an interdisciplinary team to improve and maintain existing product designs including specification, design, prototyping, validation, and testing of electromechanical robotic components and assemblies
- Design parts for volume manufacturing methods including sheet metal fabrication, injection molded plastics, high-pressure die casting, stamping, extrusion, and machining - understanding the trade-offs between each method
- Apply Design for Excellence (DfX) principles throughout the design process: design for manufacturability (DFM), design for assembly (DFA), design for maintenance, design for reliability, and design for installation
- Write requirements and functional specifications, design verification plans (DVPs), and functional test procedures
- Create and maintain engineering drawings per GD&T (ASME Y14.5) standards
- Develop and deliver high-quality design artifacts: CAD models, detailed drawings with specifications, bills of materials, trade studies, test plans, and engineering analyses
- Use statistical analysis methods for design of experiments (DOE) and data processing to validate design performance and drive data-informed decisions
Manufacturing & Supply Chain Integration
- Work with Operations, Manufacturing, Supply Chain, and Quality organizations as well as external vendors to ensure smooth production transition of design changes
- Support make-vs-buy trade-off decisions and partner with suppliers to optimize cost, quality, and lead time for components produced at scale
- Drive cost reduction initiatives through material optimization, design simplification, and manufacturing process improvements
- Provide design for manufacturability feedback during design reviews and collaborate with Process Engineering on assembly sequences, work instructions, and tooling requirements
Sustaining Engineering & Field Support (KTLO)
- Own cradle-to-grave lifecycle support for fielded hardware, including root cause analysis, corrective actions, and engineering change orders (ECOs)
- Investigate field failures, conduct failure analysis, and implement design improvements that reduce downtime and improve system reliability
- Support fulfillment center operations teams with technical guidance on hardware installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting
- Monitor field performance data and quality metrics to proactively identify and address emerging issues before they impact operations at scale
Standards & Safety Compliance
- Design hardware in compliance with applicable machine safety standards (e.g., ANSI/RIA 15.06, ISO 13849, IEC 62061) and functional safety requirements
- Participate in risk assessments and contribute to safety validation activities for robotic workcell systems
- Ensure designs meet relevant industry, regulatory, and Amazon internal safety and quality standards
Product Development Process
- Operate within an Agile Product Lifecycle framework, delivering iterative design improvements aligned with sprint and release cadences
- Participate in design reviews, retrospectives, and cross-functional planning discussions
- Develop software, or scripts as needed to aid hardware development, testing, or validation
- Begin mentoring peers and contribute to the hiring and interview process for the team
