What is a machine safety engineer?

Machine Safety Engineers are professionals who specialize in ensuring that machinery and industrial equipment operate safely and comply with relevant safety standards and regulations. They assess risks, design and implement safety systems, and conduct inspections and audits to prevent accidents and injuries in the workplace. Their work often involves collaborating with design, maintenance, and operations teams to identify potential hazards and develop solutions that minimize risk while maintaining productivity.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a machine safety engineer?

To thrive as a Machine Safety Engineer, you need expertise in engineering principles, risk assessment, and safety standards such as ISO 13849 or IEC 62061, typically supported by a degree in engineering or a related field. Familiarity with safety analysis tools, programmable logic controllers (PLCs), and certifications like TÜV Functional Safety Engineer is commonly required. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication skills are crucial for collaborating with multidisciplinary teams and ensuring compliance. These skills and qualifications are essential for designing safe machinery, preventing workplace accidents, and meeting regulatory requirements.

What are some common challenges faced by machine safety engineers when implementing new safety protocols in manufacturing environments?

Machine Safety Engineers often encounter challenges such as resistance to change from operators, integrating safety solutions with legacy machinery, and ensuring compliance with ever-evolving safety regulations. Balancing productivity goals with rigorous safety standards can require creative problem-solving and strong communication skills. Collaborating with production teams, maintenance staff, and management is key to successfully implementing new protocols, as it helps ensure buy-in and proper training across all levels.

What is the difference between Machine Safety Engineer vs Safety Technician?

AspectMachine Safety EngineerSafety Technician
CertificationsOSHA 30/ OSHA 500, CSP, or equivalentOSHA 10/ OSHA 30, safety-specific certifications
Work EnvironmentDesigning safety protocols, risk assessments, and compliance in manufacturing or industrial settingsImplementing safety procedures, inspections, and incident investigations on-site
Employer & Industry UsageManufacturing, industrial plants, engineering firmsFactories, construction sites, industrial facilities

While both roles focus on workplace safety, Machine Safety Engineers primarily design safety systems and ensure compliance during the development phase, whereas Safety Technicians implement safety measures and conduct inspections on the ground. Both roles are essential for maintaining a safe work environment in industrial settings.

Are safety engineers in demand?

Safety engineers, including machine safety engineers, are in high demand across industries such as manufacturing, construction, and energy due to increasing safety regulations and the need to prevent workplace accidents. They often require knowledge of safety standards, risk assessment, and safety management systems, making their skills valuable in ensuring compliance and protecting workers.

About ASC Machine Tools

ASC Machine Tools, Inc. has built industrial equipment in Spokane for more than 75 years. Our engineers work closely with production and service teams to build reliable machinery for customers in a variety of industries.

Position Summary

We are looking for an Automation Engineer who enjoys turning ideas into working machinery. You will take control systems from design and programming through testing and startup, then see the finished equipment come to life on the shop floor.

This is a hands-on job with a good mix of electrical design, PLC and HMI programming, machine testing, and troubleshooting. You will work directly with engineers, production staff, and customers on equipment built for a variety of industries. If you like solving real-world problems and seeing the results of your work, this is the kind of role where you can do both.

Key Responsibilities
  • Design electrical and control systems for industrial machinery.
  • Write, test, and maintain PLC and HMI software.
  • Work with mechanical engineers, production staff, and other teams to bring machine systems together.
  • Plan assigned work and keep the project team informed of progress and problems.
  • Take part in design reviews, machine builds, startup, testing, and validation.
  • Troubleshoot electrical and controls problems in the shop and in the field.
  • Find ways to improve machine performance, lower costs, and make equipment easier to build and service.
  • Work with electrical drafters to create wiring schematics and bills of materials.
Scope by Experience

Responsibilities will be based on experience. Junior engineers will work with guidance as they learn our systems and processes. More experienced engineers will lead larger projects, make technical decisions, coordinate work across teams, and mentor other engineers.

QualificationsBasic Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in electrical or mechanical engineering, or experience in related field. Relevant work experience may be considered in place of a degree.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Experience with AutoCAD, Microsoft Word, and Excel.
  • Good troubleshooting and communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience designing electrical control systems.
  • Experience with a PLC programming platform such as Studio 5000, TIA Portal, or CODESYS.
  • Ability to organize work and meet project requirements and schedules.
The following experience is useful but not required:
  • Experience with industrial or agricultural machinery, or experience in a manufacturing plant maintaining, modifying, or supporting automated equipment.
  • Servo, hydraulic, or other motion control systems.
  • C, C++, C#, JavaScript, Python, or another programming language.
  • IIOT protocols such as MQTT or OPCUA
  • SQL or PostgreSQL.
  • HMI/SCADA platforms such as Ignition, Red Lion Crimson, FactoryTalk.
  • IEC machine safety standards.
  • NFPA, NEC, UL508A standards.
  • Mentoring engineers or drafters.
Why Join ASC Machine Tools?
  • Salary of $75,000-$125,000, depending on experience.
  • Health, dental, and vision insurance, plus a 401(k) plan.
  • Hands-on engineering work with industrial machinery.
  • A team environment where engineers work directly with production and service staff.
  • Work and live in Spokane, with nearby access to outdoor recreation.
