Machine Safety Engineer information

What are some common challenges faced by Machine Safety Engineers when implementing new safety protocols in manufacturing environments?

Machine Safety Engineers often encounter challenges such as resistance to change from operators, integrating safety solutions with legacy machinery, and ensuring compliance with ever-evolving safety regulations. Balancing productivity goals with rigorous safety standards can require creative problem-solving and strong communication skills. Collaborating with production teams, maintenance staff, and management is key to successfully implementing new protocols, as it helps ensure buy-in and proper training across all levels.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Machine Safety Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Machine Safety Engineer, you need expertise in engineering principles, risk assessment, and safety standards such as ISO 13849 or IEC 62061, typically supported by a degree in engineering or a related field. Familiarity with safety analysis tools, programmable logic controllers (PLCs), and certifications like TÜV Functional Safety Engineer is commonly required. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication skills are crucial for collaborating with multidisciplinary teams and ensuring compliance. These skills and qualifications are essential for designing safe machinery, preventing workplace accidents, and meeting regulatory requirements.

What is the difference between Machine Safety Engineer vs Safety Technician?

AspectMachine Safety EngineerSafety Technician
CertificationsOSHA 30/ OSHA 500, CSP, or equivalentOSHA 10/ OSHA 30, safety-specific certifications
Work EnvironmentDesigning safety protocols, risk assessments, and compliance in manufacturing or industrial settingsImplementing safety procedures, inspections, and incident investigations on-site
Employer & Industry UsageManufacturing, industrial plants, engineering firmsFactories, construction sites, industrial facilities

While both roles focus on workplace safety, Machine Safety Engineers primarily design safety systems and ensure compliance during the development phase, whereas Safety Technicians implement safety measures and conduct inspections on the ground. Both roles are essential for maintaining a safe work environment in industrial settings.

What are Machine Safety Engineers?

Machine Safety Engineers are professionals who specialize in ensuring that machinery and industrial equipment operate safely and comply with relevant safety standards and regulations. They assess risks, design and implement safety systems, and conduct inspections and audits to prevent accidents and injuries in the workplace. Their work often involves collaborating with design, maintenance, and operations teams to identify potential hazards and develop solutions that minimize risk while maintaining productivity.

Job description

Job Title: Machine Operator
Job Description

This full-time, hands-on Machine Operator role focuses on operating a dedicated processing cell that includes automatic and semi-automatic grinding machines, as well as manual and CNC equipment. You will set up and run machines to perform precision operations such as boring, adding pinholes, splitting blades, and cutting keyways while maintaining high standards of quality, safety, and accuracy. The position requires strong mechanical aptitude, excellent communication skills, and the ability to support both production and basic inventory and shipping activities during a 1st shift schedule with some Saturday overtime.

Responsibilities

  • Set up and operate manufacturing cells that include automatic and semi-automatic grinding machines during 1st shift hours (7:20 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday) with some overtime on Saturdays as needed.
  • Perform precision machining and grinding using both CNC and manual methods, and potentially EDM, to increase blade bore diameters, add pinholes, split blades, and cut keyways to exact specifications.
  • Operate and maintain all processing equipment, including support machinery such as semi-automatic polishing machines and bead blasting equipment, ensuring consistent performance and uptime.
  • Learn and become proficient in specialized processes, including carbide tip brazing and blade tensioning/hammering, to support advanced production requirements.
  • Follow established manufacturing methods, work instructions, and safety protocols to achieve rigorous product quality, accuracy, and consistency.
  • Maintain product quality by strictly adhering to engineering specifications, process documentation, and inspection requirements.
  • Develop a thorough understanding of manufacturing and inventory control processes to help monitor inventory status and accuracy and provide feedback to leadership.
  • Maintain, clean, and service machines and facility areas on a regular schedule, documenting all maintenance activities accurately and on time.
  • Assist with shipping and receiving tasks, including loading, unloading, and properly packaging products when required.
  • Use hand tools, tape measures, and precision measuring instruments such as calipers, micrometers, and dial indicators to verify part dimensions and ensure product quality.
  • Support the management team in the development and implementation of new programs, systems, and process improvements within the production area.
  • Troubleshoot basic machine and process issues, adjust setups, and make minor corrections to keep production running efficiently.
  • Perform other duties as assigned to support overall production, quality, and operational goals.
Essential Skills
  • Minimum of two years of experience in a manufacturing or machine shop environment preferred, with prior machine operation experience in a production setting strongly valued.
  • Ability to set up and run production machines using a simple machine interface, with the capacity to learn specific equipment controls through training.
  • Experience operating CNC equipment is a plus, including basic understanding of CNC machine operation and workflow.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical specifications, drawings, or work instructions to perform accurate machining and grinding operations.
  • Proficiency in using precision measuring instruments such as calipers, micrometers, dial indicators, and tape measures to verify dimensions and tolerances.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude, including the ability to understand machine functions, recognize abnormal conditions, and perform basic troubleshooting.
  • Demonstrated ability to use hand tools safely and effectively in a production environment.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to work effectively as part of a small, collaborative team.
  • Strong attention to detail and a demonstrated commitment to quality craftsmanship and accuracy.
  • Ability to learn quickly and adapt to new processes, machinery, and specialized techniques such as grinding, brazing, and blade tensioning.
  • High school diploma or equivalent (GED) required.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
  • Trade school certification, technical training, or completion of an apprenticeship in machining, manufacturing, or a related field is highly valued.
  • Experience working in a machine shop or production environment with a focus on grinding, polishing, or similar precision processes.
  • Familiarity with inventory control processes and basic understanding of how production and inventory systems interact.
  • Experience assisting with shipping and receiving activities, including packaging, loading, and unloading products.
  • Comfort working with newer production equipment and willingness to learn the operation and maintenance of advanced machines purchased in 2023-2024.
  • Ability to support the rollout of new programs and systems by providing feedback and adapting to process changes.
  • Strong problem-solving mindset and willingness to take initiative in improving processes and maintaining equipment.
  • Reliability and consistency in attendance and punctuality for a 1st shift schedule.
Why Work Here?

You will join a small, close-knit team in a modern, climate-controlled facility with newer equipment and a strong focus on quality and craftsmanship. The environment encourages learning and skill development, giving you the opportunity to grow your mechanical and technical capabilities on advanced machinery. The organization values clear communication, teamwork, and continuous improvement, offering a stable 1st shift schedule with some overtime opportunities while maintaining a supportive and collaborative culture.

Work Environment

The role is based in a small facility with fewer than 20 employees, fostering a collaborative and team-oriented atmosphere where your contributions are visible and impactful. The production area is climate controlled, providing a comfortable and consistent working environment throughout the year. All machines are newer, with equipment purchased in 2023-2024, offering modern, well-maintained tools and technology for grinding, polishing, bead blasting, and related operations. You will primarily work a 1st shift schedule from 7:20 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, with some Saturday overtime as needed to meet production demands. The work involves standing at machines, handling parts, using hand tools and precision measuring devices, and interacting regularly with team members across production, inventory, and shipping functions.
