Are you a skilled machinist looking for a hands-on role in fabrication and machining? As a Machinist, you’ll play a key role in repairing and building products with precision, following blueprints, work orders, and instructions to ensure top-quality results. Using a variety of machining techniques and shop equipment, you’ll be responsible for both the operation and maintenance of tools essential to the trade. This position requires a strong understanding of industrial machining, including various components, techniques, and equipment. Success in this role depends on attention to detail, technical expertise, and a willingness to adapt to project demands. The equipment and skills are divided into four different categories: Group 1, Group 2, Group 3, and Group 4.

  • Group 1 Equipment: Manual Lathe - Vertical, Manual Lathe – Horizontal, Manual Mill – Vertical, Manual Boring Mill - Horizontal
  • Group 2 Equipment: CNC Lathe, CNC Mill
  • Group 3 Skills: Surface Grinder, Drill Press, Balancing
  • Group 4 Skills: Spray Welding, Line Boring

There are four levels of Machinist:

  • Machinist I – Entry Level to Proficient in operating 1 piece from Group 1 or Group 2 Equipment
  • Machinist II – Advanced ability to operate (2) pieces of Group 1 Equipment or Group 2 Equipment
  • Machinist III – Advanced ability to operate all Group 1 Equipment, advanced ability to operate at least (1) piece from Group 2 Equipment, and be proficient in Group 3 Skills
  • Machinist IV- Advanced ability to operate all Group 1 Equipment, all Group 2 Equipment, and be proficient in Group 3 and Group 4 skills.

  • Safely and efficiently operate assigned equipment
  • Read, understand, and accurately execute work orders and quality assurance (QA) standards per job requirements
  • Facilitate setups and changeovers within machine capacities
  • Secure work pieces and operate stops and guides for proper alignment
  • Monitor machine functions during operation to ensure accurate output within tolerance requirements
  • Perform quality checks during production to ensure part/piece meets tolerance requirements

Working Conditions

  • Sit, talk, hear, read, and write
  • Walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; and reach with hands and arms
  • Stand for extended periods of time
  • Lift and/or move up to 50 pounds
  • Perform duties indoors in a shop setting with occasional work outdoors in a variety of weather conditions

  • Previous relevant machining experience preferred
  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions
  • Must possess excellent math skills including adding, subtracting, decimals and fractions
  • Ability to use measuring devices such as tape measures, squares, protractors, compasses, micrometers, calipers, dial indicators, verniers, etc.
  • Possess working knowledge of basic blueprints and drawings
  • Ability to operate a variety of shop metal working equipment preferred
  • Knowledge of proper use of equipment, materials and supplies used in an industrial shop setting
  • Possess knowledge of metal plate types (steel, aluminum, stainless, galvanized, etc.), sizes, and shapes (beams, channels, angles, pipe, flat bar, etc.) preferred
