Job description

Job Title: CNC Operator
Job Description

This entry-level CNC Operator role focuses on running and operating CNC milling machines in a hands-on machine shop environment. You will start by operating the machines under close guidance and gradually learn how to perform basic setups, use precision measuring tools, and inspect parts for accuracy. This position is ideal for someone who is mechanically inclined and has some prior machine operation or light inspection experience, and who is eager to develop machining skills over time.

Responsibilities

  • Operate CNC milling machines as directed, initially focusing on basic machine operation and safe use of controls.
  • Follow established instructions to start, stop, and monitor CNC mills during production runs.
  • Assist with and gradually learn how to perform basic machine setups under guidance, including loading tools and materials.
  • Use measuring devices such as micrometers and calipers to check parts for accuracy and verify that dimensions meet specifications.
  • Read and interpret basic blueprints or production drawings to understand part requirements as your skills develop.
  • Perform minor visual and dimensional inspections on parts to identify defects or inconsistencies.
  • Maintain a clean and organized work area around the CNC mills to support safe and efficient operations.
  • Communicate any machine issues, quality concerns, or production problems to the appropriate team members.
  • Follow all safety procedures and shop guidelines while working in a loud machine shop environment.
  • Collaborate with a small team of machinists and operators, supporting production goals and learning from more experienced colleagues.
Essential Skills
  • Entry-level CNC machine operation experience or prior experience operating industrial or mechanical equipment.
  • Mechanical aptitude and strong interest in working with machines and tools.
  • Ability to use or willingness to learn to use precision measuring tools such as micrometers and calipers.
  • Basic understanding of or exposure to machining concepts, particularly related to milling operations.
  • Minor inspection experience, including visual and dimensional checks of parts or components.
  • Ability to follow instructions carefully and learn new procedures step by step.
  • Comfort working in a loud machine shop environment.
  • Strong attention to detail when checking parts for accuracy and quality.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
  • Experience reading or learning to read blueprints or technical drawings.
  • Previous exposure to CNC mills or other machining equipment, even in a trainee or helper capacity.
  • Interest in developing long-term skills in machining, CNC setup, and inspection.
  • Willingness to be trained on machine setup and inspection techniques by experienced team members.
  • Reliability and consistency in attendance and punctuality in a production environment.
Why Work Here?

You will join a small, close-knit team where experienced professionals invest time in teaching and developing your machining skills. The environment supports hands-on learning, gradual skill growth, and the opportunity to move from basic machine operation into more advanced setup and inspection responsibilities. You can build a solid foundation in CNC machining in a setting that values mechanical aptitude, curiosity, and a strong work ethic.

Work Environment

This role is based in a traditional machine shop environment that is loud due to running equipment and active production. You will work closely with a team of approximately five people, fostering a collaborative and supportive atmosphere. The primary equipment includes CNC milling machines and precision measuring tools such as micrometers and calipers. You should expect to be on your feet for much of the shift and to follow standard shop safety practices and attire appropriate for a machining environment.
