Job description

Title: Machine Operator/Wrapper

Department: Copy Paper

Location: 1107 Burt Street, Shreveport, LA 71107

Wage Category: Non-Exempt

Report To: Assistant Director, Copy Paper

Overview: Machine Operator/Wrapper supports efficient production by serving as a versatile team member who operates, monitors, and maintains production-line machinery. Responsibilities include operating equipment, conducting quality inspections, performing preventive maintenance, and adhering to production and safety standards.

Duties include, but are not limited to:

Equipment Operation and Monitoring

  • Crosstrained and serves as a backup for the Machine Operator/Sheeter as needed.
  • Oversee and operate the wrapping machine and associated support equipment, monitoring all machine functions and controls for continuous, efficient operation.
  • Adjust machine settings, speed, and temperature to meet specific product requirements and maintain effective wrapping processes.
  • Support the machine operator during roll changes to ensure smooth transitions.
  • Assist the machine operator with sheet operation during the operator's absence.
  • Continuously monitor machine operations to detect irregularities.
  • Ensure machines remain clean and properly functioning throughout production.

Quality Control and Inspection

  • Conduct real-time visual inspections to verify that machinery operates within designated parameters.
  • Identify and remove defective products and materials from the production line.
  • Perform regular quality checks on finished products using the ream checklist to ensure compliance with standards for glue, cleanliness, cuts, labeling, and mill number accuracy.
  • Perform additional routine quality checks to maintain product standards throughout the run.
  • Complete all production run documentation thoroughly and accurately.
  • Perform scheduled and preventative maintenance on machinery.

Maintenance and Housekeeping

  • Perform scheduled and preventative maintenance on machinery.
  • Follow established protocols to maintain a clean, safe, and organized work environment both inside the facility and on surrounding grounds.
  • Perform additional duties and responsibilities as assigned by supervisory staff.
  • High school diploma or equivalent is helpful but not required.
  • Ability to operate all production equipment.
  • Ability to use hand tools to maintain machines properly (i.e., Allen wrench, standard wrench, screw drivers, etc.).
  • Ability to perform physical activities and stand or walk for extended periods with frequent bending, lifting, and some climbing. (i.e., at times required to carry or lift a maximum of 50 lbs. Weight over 50 lbs. must be shared with someone else.)
  • Must have one year of production experience.
  • Good interpersonal and communicative skills.
  • Ability to deal pleasantly and courteously with management and coworkers.
  • Ability to work in a manufacturing environment subjected to noise.
  • Ability to work in atmospheric conditions (The worker is subject to one or more of the following conditions that affect the respiratory system and the skin: fumes, odors, clouds of paper dust.)
  • Must have basic electrical knowledge.
