Job Title: Machine Operator

Job Description

The Machine Operator operates, monitors, and adjusts packaging machinery to support efficient production, consistent product quality, and adherence to company standards. This role requires strong technical aptitude, attention to detail, and the ability to troubleshoot equipment issues while meeting production goals in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.

Responsibilities

  • Operate packaging equipment associated with the manufacturing process, ensuring safe, efficient, and continuous production.
  • Demonstrate technical proficiency with vertical form-fill-seal (VFFS) and horizontal form-fill-seal (HFFS) packaging equipment.
  • Monitor, troubleshoot, and adjust statistical weighers to minimize product giveaway and packaging film waste while maximizing line efficiency.
  • Utilize computer systems effectively, including Microsoft Office applications, OIT/HMI interfaces, and process control systems, to support production and documentation needs.
  • Maximize equipment uptime by anticipating and performing film and coding ribbon changes as needed to avoid unnecessary downtime.
  • Accurately complete production documentation, line logs, and required paperwork, and operate barcode scanning equipment as required.
  • Assist with onboarding and training new employees on packaging processes, equipment operation, and standard procedures.
  • Continuously monitor equipment performance, identify operational issues, and perform minor adjustments using appropriate tools.
  • Promptly escalate recurring or unresolved equipment issues to supervisors or maintenance personnel to ensure timely resolution.
  • Understand and achieve established production targets and performance goals by making necessary equipment adjustments and maintaining efficient line operation.
  • Verify packaging materials such as film, boxes, dividers, and other supplies to ensure proper materials are used and are free of defects.
  • Monitor incoming product quality to ensure size, color specifications (bleached/unbleached), and moisture levels meet established standards.
  • Inspect finished packaged products for appearance, coding accuracy, print quality, and seal integrity to ensure they meet quality requirements.
  • Monitor package weights and make adjustments as necessary to achieve product weight targets and minimize product giveaway.
  • Perform additional packaging-related duties and tasks as assigned to support overall production needs.

Essential Skills

  • Proven experience operating production and packaging machinery in a manufacturing or food processing environment.
  • Hands-on machine operating skills, including setup, operation, and basic adjustments.
  • Ability to operate and monitor vertical form-fill-seal (VFFS) and horizontal form-fill-seal (HFFS) packaging equipment.
  • Experience with statistical weighers, including monitoring and adjusting settings to control product giveaway and film waste.
  • Strong troubleshooting skills for equipment and process issues in a production setting.
  • Proficiency using computer systems, including Microsoft Office applications and OIT/HMI interfaces.
  • Ability to use process control systems to monitor and adjust production parameters.
  • Experience with packaging, inspection, and quality checks for finished products.
  • Capability to operate barcode scanning equipment accurately and efficiently.
  • Effective reading, writing, and speaking skills to understand instructions, complete documentation, and communicate with team members.
  • Ability to work any shift as required by the operation.
  • Willingness and ability to work overtime when necessary to meet production demands.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds as part of regular job duties.
  • Ability to pass a machine operator test as a condition of qualification for the role.
  • Ability to pass a forklift certification class and safely operate a forklift once certified.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience in food processing or working with food processing machinery.
  • Background in packing and packaging within a manufacturing environment.
  • Familiarity with inspection processes for both in-process and finished goods.
  • Comfort working in a high-volume production facility with multiple lines and equipment.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to maintaining product quality and consistency.
  • Ability to support and train new team members on equipment and processes.
  • Flexibility to adjust to changing production priorities and schedules, including working six days per week during peak periods.

Why Work Here?

Employees join this organization to be part of a large, established production facility that offers steady work, structured shifts, and opportunities to build strong technical skills in modern packaging and process control systems. The environment supports continuous learning through on-the-job training, certification opportunities, and cross-training on multiple types of equipment. Team members benefit from a culture that emphasizes safety, quality, and collaboration, with clear production goals and the tools needed to achieve them. The facility’s scale and multiple shifts provide opportunities for long-term career growth and advancement for those who demonstrate reliability, skill development, and strong performance.

Work Environment

The role is based in a large production facility situated on more than 15 acres, with an average headcount of around 350 employees. This is a clean nut processing environment that can be very loud due to the operation of machinery, so employees should be comfortable working in a high-noise industrial setting. The position requires flexibility to work any shift based on seniority, with three primary shifts: 1st shift from 6:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., 2nd shift from 2:00 p.m. to 10:30 p.m., and 3rd shift from 10:00 p.m. to 6:30 a.m. The typical schedule runs Monday through Saturday, and working six days per week is expected, especially during harvest season when average weekly hours range from approximately 48 to 55 hours. Employees regularly work with packaging machinery, statistical weighers, forklifts (once certified), computer systems, OIT/HMI interfaces, process control systems, and barcode scanners. The work involves standing for extended periods, performing repetitive tasks, and lifting up to 50 pounds while maintaining focus on safety, quality, and production efficiency.
