PLASMA OPERATOR

Organization: Goodfellow Corporation Department: Manufacturing Reports To: Production Supervisor/Manager

POSITION SUMMARY

Goodfellow Corporation is seeking a skilled and safety-focused Plasma Operator to support our manufacturing operations. The Plasma Operator is responsible for setting up and operating plasma cutting equipment to cut, trim, bevel, and prepare metal components according to engineering drawings, work orders, specifications, and production requirements.

This position requires strong attention to detail, mechanical aptitude, computer proficiency, and the ability to safely handle and position heavy materials. The Plasma Operator is expected to consistently produce accurate, quality parts while supporting production schedules, maintaining equipment, and following Goodfellow Corporation's safety and quality standards.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Set up and operate plasma cutting equipment to cut metal components according to engineering drawings, work orders, layouts, and specifications.
  • Read and interpret engineering drawings, blueprints, cut sheets, and work instructions to determine required dimensions, contours, bevels, and material specifications.
  • Program and operate plasma table software as required for assigned production work.
  • Select appropriate cutting parameters, including amperage, gas pressure, consumables, electrodes, and nozzles based on material type and thickness.
  • Load, position, and remove steel and other materials using forklifts, overhead cranes, and other approved material-handling equipment.
  • Verify material type, thickness, dimensions, and job requirements before beginning cutting operations.
  • Adjust machine settings and cutting parameters to achieve accurate and efficient cuts.
  • Monitor plasma cutting operations and make adjustments as necessary to maintain cut quality and dimensional accuracy.
  • Inspect completed parts for accuracy, quality, and conformance to engineering drawings and specifications.
  • Identify and report material defects, equipment issues, drawing discrepancies, and quality concerns.
  • Perform basic troubleshooting and routine maintenance of plasma cutting equipment.
  • Replace consumables and maintain equipment in proper operating condition.
  • Remove slag, clean parts, and perform basic finishing or preparation work as required.
  • Properly identify, organize, and stage completed parts for the next phase of production.
  • Maintain accurate production records and documentation as required.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area.
  • Follow established production procedures, work instructions, and quality requirements.
  • Follow all Goodfellow Corporation safety policies and procedures, including requirements related to PPE, machine operation, material handling, forklifts, and overhead cranes.
  • Communicate effectively with supervisors, engineering, fabrication, welding, and other production team members regarding job requirements or production concerns.
  • Support production priorities and assist with other manufacturing duties as needed.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

WORK ENVIRONMENT

This position primarily works in a manufacturing and fabrication environment. PHYSICAL DEMANDS

REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Minimum of 1-2 years of related plasma cutting, CNC plasma table, metal fabrication, or similar manufacturing experience.
  • Experience reading and interpreting engineering drawings, blueprints, or fabrication drawings.
  • Experience operating or working around forklifts and material-handling equipment.
  • Strong computer skills and ability to learn plasma table programming/software.
  • Basic mathematical and measurement skills.
  • Ability to accurately follow work orders, drawings, specifications, and written instructions.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a production team.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to producing quality work.
  • Commitment to following established safety procedures and requirements.

PREFERRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Previous CNC plasma table programming and operating experience.
  • AutoCAD or similar CAD/drawing software experience.
  • Previous experience in steel fabrication, heavy equipment manufacturing, or industrial manufacturing.
  • Forklift and/or overhead crane operating experience.
