Job Summary:

The SMT Operator will assist in the manufacturing of printed circuit boards, product assemblies, and report to the operations manager. This person will work with a small team to perform assembly of electronic components that includes preparation, placement and installation using a modern SMT line. Our line includes a Speedprint 710 stencil printer, Europlacer iiNEO+ pick and place machine, BTU reflow oven, and Omron 730 AOI machine. We perform a high mix run of low to medium sized production batches.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Programming and maintenance of the SMT assembly line and any related equipment.
  • Perform all facets of surface mount assembly.
  • Primary responsibility for line operation including screen printer, pick and place machine, and reflow oven, Automatic Optical Inspection machine, and ancillary SMT line equipment.
  • Operate the equipment, including understanding the sequence of events, the control panel, and indicators, and understanding how to replenish supplies and components per Standard Operating Procedures
  • Set-up of the equipment, and maintain operation, which includes machine adjustments and ability to perform set-up (feeder loading and changing) per the manufacturing instructions and Standard Operating Procedures
  • Ownership of general equipment cleaning and upkeep per the Standard Operating Procedures
  • Manual assembly of electronic components including some complex part installations, custom specs and quality standards.
  • Perform hand soldering, inspection, and rework, SMT, mixed assemblies and custom parts as per Engineering specifications and IPC workmanship standards.
  • Component preparation, placement, and installation.
  • Be able to work on various aspects of the manufacturing operations.
  • Participate in training and certification programs to ensure job knowledge and skills set.

Qualifications, Skill, and Attributes

  • Knowledge in printed circuit board related processes - soldering, cleaning, and repairing
  • Specialized SMT knowledge is ideal
  • Hands on manufacturing skills such as manual soldering
  • Ability to read and to work from schematics, process sheets, a sample or other work instructions
  • Be able to work independently with minimal supervision
  • Comply with all department and company rules
  • Working with extremely small parts using a microscope and small hand tools
  • Strong attention to detail and focus on quality
  • Technical communication skills - must be able to interface with engineering and purchasing
  • Use hand, air, and power tools
  • Component sourcing experience preferred
  • Previous experience working in a manufacturing environment, knowledge of standards in electronic components handling preferred

Physical Demands: The physical demands can vary depending on the essential job function. Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently. Must occasionally lift and move parts and supplies, various weights.
Visual Acuity: Required to have close visual acuity to perform activities for operation of machines, including visual inspection, using measurement devices; and/or assembly of parts at distances close to the eyes. Eye protection will be provided if required.

Work Environment: Required to work in a clean room, ESD safe environmental condition 90% of the time. Will be required to wear proper ESD and clean room attire. There is sufficient noise to cause the worker to increase volume to be heard above ambient noise level. Hearing protection will be provided if required.

Technical Degree or 2 years work experience
