The Department of Clinical Sciences at the Auburn University College of Veterinary Medicine is seeking applicants to fill a full‑time, 12‑month/year appointment. Depending on experience, qualifications, and interest, the successful candidate will be appointed to either a tenure‑track (Assistant/Associate/Full Professor) or a non‑tenure‑track (Clinical Assistant/Associate/Full Professor or Professor of Practice) position in small animal neurology/neurosurgery.

The successful candidate will be expected to collaboratively participate in teaching, clinical service, and research/scholarly activity. Teaching responsibilities include the clinical, didactic, and laboratory instructional activities of professional veterinary medicine and postgraduate training programs related to neurology/neurosurgery. Full‑time equivalent (FTE) assignments for clinical service and research responsibilities are negotiable and will depend on the successful candidate’s interests and the type of appointment, i.e., clinical vs. tenure‑track. Clinical service includes patient care, procedural and surgical interventions, teaching veterinary medical students and interns, resident training, and consultation with private practitioners. Participation in shared after‑hours emergency surgery back‑up to the neurology/neurosurgery residents is required.

The neurology/neurosurgery service at Auburn University is committed to excellence in clinical service, teaching of professional veterinary students, and resident training. The neurology service is complemented by specialists in orthopedic/soft tissue/oncological surgery, small animal medicine, medical and radiation oncology, emergency/critical care, anesthesia, cardiology, dermatology, radiology, rehabilitation therapy, small animal and large animal ophthalmology, equine medicine and surgery, sports medicine, food animal medicine and surgery, equine, food animal and small animal theriogenology, dairy medicine, and pathology.

The successful candidate will join a team of 3 ACVIM(Neurology) board‑certified faculty (one has a limited part‑time clinical appointment), 3 residents, and 2 service technicians. The working environment is supportive and collegial, with structured mentorship for new faculty. Professional development is both encouraged and expected, with support for continuing education and guidance from experienced colleagues. The Wilford & Kate Bailey Small Animal Teaching Hospital is one of the newest in the country. It is fully equipped with state‑of‑the‑art equipment and has a complement of eleven operating rooms. Onsite imaging equipment includes 2 Siemens wireless digital radiology systems, Siemens flat panel detector fluoroscopy, Toshiba Aplio 500 and Aplio 300 ultrasound machines, Siemens Skrya 3T MRI, GE VCT 64‑slice scanner, and Enhanced Technologies digital gamma camera with a large rectangular detector. All images are digital and are stored in a central PACS allowing image viewing throughout the hospital.

Five board‑certified radiologists are available to assist with diagnostic image acquisition and interpretation. Specialty equipment for the neurology/neurosurgery service includes an OPMI® Pentero® surgical operating microscope, Hall Air Drill, DePuy Synthes Electric Pen Drive system, a CUSA, support for intracranial surgery (craniotome and intra‑operative ultrasonography), Cadwell® electrodiagnostic equipment (EEG, EMG, BAER, and nerve conduction velocity capabilities), Brainsight® neuronavigation VETG equipment, a Varian Edge stereotactic linear accelerator, and physical rehabilitation service (including an underwater treadmill and infinity pool). Access is available to 3.0T and 7.0T magnets for research and clinical patients at the Auburn University MRI Research Center in the nearby AU Research Park.

Qualified applicants must hold a DVM or equivalent degree and must be board‑eligible or be Diplomates of the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (ACVIM) (Neurology) or European College of Veterinary Neurology (ECVN) at the time employment begins. The candidate selected for this position must meet eligibility requirements to work in the United States when the appointment is scheduled to begin and continue working legally for the proposed term of employment. Eligibility for faculty veterinary licensure in the State of Alabama is also required.

For a tenure‑track position, research experience and an advanced degree (MS or PhD) are desired but not required. Tenure‑track faculty are expected to establish a specific area of research focus, seek extramural funding, and mentor residents pursuing graduate degrees.
