Job description

Lone Star Paving is a paving contractor, operating in the Central Texas region with paving crews, HMA, aggregate, trucking, milling, and quality control. Our operations complete heavy highway and civil projects throughout Texas. We pride ourselves in being a family-oriented organization with a goal of upholding the safety and health of our number one asset, our employees.

Position Overview

The Milling Machine Operator will work closely with the Milling Manager and Maintenance Team to ensure consistent, safe, and efficient operation of milling machinery to minimize downtime and optimize production.

The ideal candidate has experience with milling work particularly relating to asphalt, HMA, and aggregate industries. They should be able to address mechanical issues and ensure the safe practices of all employees.

Key Responsibilities

  • Operate heavy equipment in a safe and appropriate manner.
  • Perform daily maintenance and safety checks of equipment.
  • Knowledge to load trucks correctly; keep loads centered and not over load the trucks
  • Follow grades, run slope, and watch and mark manholes and valves
  • Have a high level of situational awareness and keep look out for other workers and equipment in the immediate area; work together with ground crew to maintain the safety of all employees
  • Operate other heavy equipment and other construction related duties as required.
  • Collaboration - Working closely with operators and maintenance technicians to identify and address issues impacting production.
  • Additional responsibilities as may be assumed or assigned as needed in support of our company's effort to achieve client loyalty.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of 2-3+ years' experience within the road construction industry
  • 1-3+ years of qualified experience operating milling machinery
  • Understanding of diagnostics, maintenance, and operation of milling machines
  • Mechanical aptitude and in-depth knowledge of industrial machinery
  • Ability to work in a demanding, fast-paced environment
  • Physical ability to work outdoors in various conditions and stand for extended periods of time
  • Must be organized with a detail-oriented mindset
  • Must be positive, friendly, and professional
  • Ability to work well with others in a group or one-on-one setting
  • Promote, execute and adhere to the company's safety policy, and encourage all employees, subcontractors and consultants to adopt safety as a culture.

  • Technical skills - Ability to use equipment, hand tools, and power tools effectively
  • Mechanical aptitude - Basic understanding of mechanical systems within the plant to diagnose areas of concern.
  • Problem-solving skills - Ability to analyze problems, identify root causes, and strategize with management and maintenance teams to implement solutions.
  • Safety awareness - Commitment to following all safety protocols and regulations.
  • Ability to engage in a variety of tasks simultaneously and consistently meet deadlines.
  • Must demonstrate professional communication in reaching out to employees and managers for needed documents
  • Willingness to take on additional tasks and responsibilities as they arise
  • Exhibit excellent time management skills and ability to prioritize various tasks and complete them in a timely manner
  • Able to perform duties independently
  • Working knowledge of aggregate plants and associated equipment, and an understanding of operations and safety requirements is preferred
  • Familiarity with MSHA and OSHA regulations, a plus
  • High School diploma or GED, a plus but not required

Working Conditions

  • Be available for overtime, extended hours, night shifts, and weekends as required
  • Some travel may be required as our operations span throughout Texas
  • Work will be performed in both a general warehouse environment as well as a construction site environment, which could include but not be limited to inclement weather, heat and humidity, and exposure to dust and asphalt.
  • Must be able to move over rough terrain on project sites
  • Must comply with the company's drug and alcohol testing requirements.
  • Use of Personal Protection Equipment is required.
  • Proper PPE is required at all times.
  • Requires periodic participation and attendance at company events and meetings
