What is a machine learning?

A Machine Learning job involves developing algorithms and models that enable computers to learn from data and make predictions or decisions without explicit programming. Professionals in this field work with large datasets, design and train machine learning models, and optimize them for performance and accuracy. Roles often require knowledge of programming languages like Python or R, experience with frameworks like TensorFlow or PyTorch, and an understanding of statistics and data science principles. Machine learning engineers and data scientists collaborate with software developers and domain experts to build AI-driven solutions for various industries.

What are the typical day-to-day responsibilities in a machine learning role?

As a machine learning professional, your daily tasks may include data preprocessing, developing and training models, evaluating performance metrics, and experimenting with algorithms to optimize results. You’ll often collaborate closely with data scientists, software engineers, and business stakeholders to align technical solutions with organizational goals. Regular activities can also involve deploying models to production, monitoring performance, and troubleshooting any issues that arise post-deployment. Staying up to date with recent ML research and participating in team discussions or code reviews are also common parts of the job.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in a machine learning position?

To thrive in Machine Learning, you need a solid background in mathematics, statistics, programming (especially Python or R), and a formal degree in computer science, data science, or a related field. Experience with popular ML frameworks (such as TensorFlow, PyTorch, or Scikit-learn), version control, and relevant certifications like AWS Certified Machine Learning are highly valued. Strong problem-solving skills, curiosity, clear communication, and the ability to work both independently and within multidisciplinary teams make candidates stand out. These skills and qualities are essential for developing robust models, staying updated with technology advancements, and collaborating effectively on complex projects.

Is machine learning a high paying job?

Machine learning engineers and specialists are generally among the higher-paid roles in the tech industry due to their advanced skills in algorithms, programming, and data analysis. Salaries vary based on experience, location, and industry, but the field is known for competitive compensation compared to many other tech roles.

What jobs can I get with machine learning?

With a background in machine learning, you can pursue roles such as machine learning engineer, data scientist, AI researcher, or data analyst. These positions typically require skills in programming languages like Python or R, knowledge of algorithms, and experience with tools like TensorFlow or PyTorch.

Job description

Are you looking for an opportunity to bring your unique skills and experiences to a leading commercial loan servicer?

As a Senior Engineer, Machine Learning at Berkadia, you'll be at the forefront of applying cutting-edge machine learning and generative AI to redefine how the commercial real estate industry operates. Berkadia now has a dedicated machine learning team and an established generative AI system - Berkie - which is transforming the way Berkadians work. In this role, you will contribute directly to expanding and improving Berkie, building on top of proprietary company data to create intelligent systems that drive operational efficiency, enhance workflows, and generate revenue.

You will work closely with product, engineering, architecture, and data teams to design, implement, and scale AI systems - ranging from predictive modeling and traditional machine learning pipelines to agentic systems, intelligent document processing, and generative AI applications. This is a high-impact position for someone passionate about applying AI to real-world problems, who thrives in a collaborative environment and stays ahead in a fast-moving field.

Join Berkadia's loan servicing platform and learn from the best of the best at the largest U.S. non-bank commercial mortgage servicer in the industry. We provide the personal and professional development opportunities you need to impact the commercial real estate industry, build a career that takes the long view, and reach your full potential. Be Your Best Self. Be Berkadia.

We are committed to growing your career, so in this role you will:

Responsibilities:

  • Design, implement, and maintain production-ready machine learning systems using both generative and traditional techniques.
  • Architect end-to-end AI solutions for use cases such as intelligent document processing, agentic systems, and information retrieval.
  • Drive the continued development of Berkie, Berkadia's generative AI platform, ensuring it delivers meaningful access to proprietary data and supports efficiency and growth across the business.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams - including product, engineering, and data - to identify impactful problems and translate them into scalable AI solutions.
  • Write maintainable, high-quality code using Python and modern cloud infrastructure; use notebooks as needed for experimentation and rapid iteration.
  • Establish and contribute to best practices in MLOps, including model deployment, monitoring, observability, and continuous improvement.
  • Participate in peer reviews, design discussions, and team learning sessions to foster transparency and knowledge-sharing.
  • Document system designs, decisions, and outcomes to improve clarity and reproducibility across the team.
  • Stay up-to-date with the rapidly evolving ML and GenAI landscape; self-learning and curiosity are essential to success in this role.
  • Take initiative, share wins, and work with purpose - we value engineers who care deeply about their craft and their impact on others.

We are passionate about your growth, so to achieve success in this role you should have:

Qualifications:

  • 6+ years of professional software development experience, with a focus on Python.
  • Experience building both traditional machine learning models (e.g., regression, classification, clustering) and generative AI systems (e.g., LLMs, retrieval-augmented generation, prompt engineering).
  • Required experience designing and building AI agents, including tool use, orchestration, memory/context management, and workflow automation.
  • Required experience building AI evaluation harnesses to test, measure, monitor, and improve agent and LLM application quality.
  • Familiarity with cloud infrastructure and MLOps practices (deployment, monitoring, observability).
  • Experience working with unstructured and semi-structured data, including transforming it into structured formats via machine learning.
  • React frontend development skills/Javascript are a plus.
  • Experience with Agile methodologies and CI/CD practices.
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or another STEM field with heavy analytics focus preferred

We believe People Matter, so we offer benefits that go beyond:

  • Monthly paid volunteer hours and donation matching to benefit our communities
  • Employee Resource Groups that help you grow with us
  • Fertility and family planning services
