About the School of Physics at the Georgia Institute of Technology

The School of Physics at Georgia Tech currently has 55 academic faculty and its graduate program is ranked 21st in the nation by US News and World Report. The School has a broad research program with strengths in astrophysics, condensed matter, atomic, molecular and optical physics, physics of living systems, nonlinear science and soft matter physics. The School is also a key player in interdisciplinary initiatives established within Georgia Tech, such as quantum systems, neuroscience, microbial dynamics, planetary sciences, and data science/machine learning. Its diverse student body comprises more than 150 graduate students (Ph.D and Masters) and over 270 undergraduate majors.

Job Summary

The School of Physics ( https://physics.gatech.edu/) at the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta, Georgia invites applications for an open-rank tenured/tenure-track faculty position at the interface between machine learning and physics. Applicants will be considered at all ranks. We anticipate hiring faculty working on advancing machine learning methodology as applied to quantum science, astrophysics, physics of living systems, nonlinear science, soft matter physics or other related areas. The faculty will be part of an initiative to catalyze machine-learning-driven research in the School of Physics and will benefit from substantial expertise and resources in artificial intelligence and machine learning that already exist in the Colleges of Sciences, Engineering, and Computing. Candidates are expected to demonstrate an exceptional commitment to the teaching and mentoring of students. Appointments at senior ranks will be considered for candidates with established and internationally recognized research programs.

Responsibilities

Perform groundbreaking research at the interface between machine learning and quantum science, astrophysics, physics of living systems, nonlinear science, soft matter physics or other related areas.

Tenure-track academic faculty members maintain research portfolios that are supported by grants and contracts with federal and state agencies, private foundations, and/or industry.

Demonstrate an exceptional commitment to the teaching and mentoring of students at all levels.

Contribute to the governance and operation of the School of Physics and the Institute.

Communicate scientific advances through publication and outreach to the scientific community and public at large.

Required Qualifications

Candidate is expected to have received a doctorate in Physics or a related discipline.

Candidate is expected to have a record of success in advancing methodology and applications of machine learning in Physics.

Appointments at senior ranks will be considered for candidates with established and internationally recognized research programs.
