Want to gain real-world experience and make a tangible impact on your community? The Public Works Department - Parks Facilities is seeking a creative, highly talented, and motivated Intern II. This internship will provide university students hands-on experience and on-the-job training. It also provides an opportunity for students to learn about government processes while applying classroom theories and concepts to "real-world" situations at one of the Inland Empire's best cities.

The City offers a casual and energetic business environment. This position is required to work an average of 16-20 hours per week. This internship is year-round and may be modified every quarter. Workdays of supervising city staff are Monday thru Thursday, 7am to 6pm, so there is flexibility with the incumbent's school schedule.

Parks and Facilities - CIP Division Specific Job Duties and Information

The ideal candidate is pursuing a degree in Engineering or a related field with a desire to learn more about managing Capital Improvement Projects for parks and public facilities. The Intern II will support the successful delivery of both large- and small-scale Capital Improvement Projects, contributing to the City of Corona's Strategic Plan goals of Sound Infrastructure and a Safe Community.

  1. Support project management tasks such as coordinating with consultants and contractors, tracking project milestones, and assisting with documentation and reporting throughout the project lifecycle.
  2. Assist CIP staff with data collection, analysis, and responses to public and interdepartmental requests related to capital improvement projects and facility enhancements.
  3. Collect, summarize, and analyze project data, including construction timelines, budget tracking, and community impact metrics.
  4. Conduct site assessments and evaluate reports and studies related to park and facility improvements.
  5. Prepare detailed plans, exhibits, and work orders using computer-aided drafting (CAD) software to support project design and implementation.
  6. Actively contribute and engage as a valued member of the CIP team.

The successful candidate will be working to gain valuable experience working on Plans, Specifications, and Estimates (PSE) Packages, and assist with various task.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

  • Office administration practices and procedures; correct English usage, including spelling, grammar and punctuation; City organization, functions and procedures applicable to assigned areas of responsibility; basic practices and terminology used within the Engineering division.

  • Graduation from high school or G.E.D. equivalent, current enrollment in a degree related program at an accredited college or university, and completion of one year of the required curriculum.

  • Majors in Civil Engineering, Urban Planning, Construction Management, Project Management, or related fields are highly desirable.

The Department
The City of Corona's Public Works Department is dedicated to developing, managing, and maximizing the city's infrastructure investments to enhance residents' quality of life-while innovating to meet future needs. It oversees six key divisions: Administration, Capital Improvement, Environmental Services, Fleet Services, Street Maintenance, Traffic Engineering, and Public Transit. The department is responsible for planning and executing capital projects, maintaining streets, sidewalks, traffic signals, signage, and stormwater systems, as well as ensuring environmental compliance and managing public transit services. Whether it's driving down city roads, walking on a sidewalk, or riding a bike, the Public Works team ensures these systems are safe, reliable, and well-maintained

The Organization
The City of Corona is a General Law city operating under a Council-Manager form of government. The Mayor is selected by the Council and serves as the presiding officer for one year.
The City is organized into the following departments/organizational units: Community Services, City Manager's Office, Economic Development, Finance, Fire, Human Resources, Information Technology, Legal and Risk Management, Police, Planning & Development, Public Works and Utilities. Oversight of these departments is divided between the City Manager and two Assistant City Managers.
