What is a Controls Engineer?

Controls Engineers design, test, implement, and troubleshoot control systems including Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs), Human Machine Interfaces (HMIs), and low-voltage electrical circuits. These systems monitor inputs like pressure, temperature, flow rates, and equipment status, enabling automated responses or alerts to ensure safe and efficient pipeline operations.

Controls Engineers collaborate across departments-Operations, Engineering, Safety, Compliance, Cybersecurity, and more-to improve system reliability, safety, and performance. What a Controls Engineering Co-Op might learn and do:

  • Understand pipeline systems, layout, and operations.
