Converting Utility Operator / General Labor
Location: Coal Center, PA
Shift: Openings on 1st and 2nd shift
Pay: $18.47/hour + $0.55/hour shift differential for 2nd shift
The Opportunity
The Converting Utility Operator / General Labor position supports safe, efficient production operations within the Coal Center converting department. This role is responsible for assisting with machine set up, following production specifications, supporting operators, maintaining quality standards, and helping ensure production goals are met in a timely and safe manner.
This position is ideal for someone who is dependable, safety-focused, willing to learn, and comfortable working as part of a production team in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.
How You Will Impact Smurfit Westrock
  • Follow all safety rules, procedures, and work practices to support a safety-first culture.
  • Perform machine set up tasks on converting equipment as directed by production specifications and in a timely manner.
  • Follow line clearing procedures and ensure work areas are prepared for safe, efficient production.
  • Set up and follow stacking patterns according to production specifications.
  • Read, understand, and apply print specifications, production specifications, factory work orders, and factory print cards.
  • Operate machines efficiently and independently once trained.
  • Meet or exceed daily production goals while maintaining quality and safety standards.
  • Support quality checks and ensure standards are met on every order.
  • Assist operators after machine set up and use available time to prepare machines for the next set up.
  • Learn finishing machines and support the main line bander as needed.
  • Complete required paperwork and input production-related computer data accurately.
  • Assist on converting machines and support other team members as needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by a Supervisor, Superintendent, or Production Manager.

What You Need to Succeed
  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Previous manufacturing or production experience preferred.
  • Ability to learn and perform all job functions of the Converting Utility Operator role.
  • Ability to read, comprehend, and interpret written and graphic instructions.
  • Ability to understand design specifications, factory work orders, production specifications, and print cards.
  • Ability to read a tape measure in 1/16-inch increments.
  • General math skills, including addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.
  • Ability to follow instructions, work as part of a team, and assist across converting machines.
  • Ability to write clearly and complete required documentation.
  • Basic computer skills for production-related data entry.
  • Ability to interact with employees and management in a courteous, tactful, and patient manner.

Physical Requirements
  • Ability to lift, push, pull, and carry materials weighing up to 50 pounds occasionally.
  • Ability to stand for up to 12 hours per day and walk throughout the facility.
  • Ability to grasp objects with hands and fingers.
  • Ability to repetitively bend and twist at trunk level.
  • Ability to crouch, kneel, reach, and move as required by the position.
  • Ability to work safely in a manufacturing environment with varying noise levels and production demands.
