What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in Machine Automation, and why are they important?

To excel in Machine Automation, you need a solid background in robotics, control systems, and electrical or mechanical engineering, often supported by a relevant degree. Familiarity with PLC programming, SCADA systems, and certifications like Siemens or Allen-Bradley are highly valued. Critical thinking, problem-solving, and a collaborative mindset help professionals adapt and innovate in complex industrial environments. These competencies ensure efficient, safe, and reliable automation solutions that drive productivity and operational excellence.

What is the highest paid job in robotics?

The highest paid jobs in robotics often include robotics engineers, robotics directors, and automation executives, with senior roles such as robotics engineering managers earning six-figure salaries. These positions typically require advanced degrees, extensive experience, and expertise in areas like control systems, AI, and machine learning.

What engineer makes $500,000 a year?

Senior automation engineers or control systems engineers with extensive experience, advanced skills in programming and robotics, and certifications can earn salaries approaching or exceeding $500,000 annually, especially in high-demand industries like aerospace or oil and gas. Such roles often require leadership responsibilities, specialized knowledge of PLCs, SCADA systems, and automation software, along with a strong track record of project management and innovation.

What is the difference between Machine Automation vs Robotics Technician?

AspectMachine AutomationRobotics Technician
CredentialsTypically requires engineering or technical certifications in automation or control systemsRequires technical certifications or associate degrees in robotics or electronics
Work EnvironmentIndustrial settings, manufacturing plants, automation control roomsManufacturing floors, robotics maintenance areas, assembly lines
Industry UsageUsed across manufacturing, automotive, and process industries for automation systemsCommonly employed in robotics maintenance, troubleshooting, and installation

Machine Automation specialists focus on designing, programming, and maintaining automated systems to improve manufacturing efficiency. Robotics Technicians primarily install, troubleshoot, and repair robotic equipment. While both roles work in industrial environments and require technical skills, Machine Automation professionals often have broader responsibilities in system integration, whereas Robotics Technicians focus on robotic hardware and maintenance.

What is machine automation?

Machine automation refers to the use of technology and machinery to perform tasks that were traditionally carried out by humans. This involves using control systems, such as computers or robots, to operate equipment and processes with minimal human intervention. Machine automation is commonly used in manufacturing, packaging, and other industries to increase efficiency, reduce errors, and improve safety. Automated systems can range from simple programmable machines to complex robotics and artificial intelligence-driven processes.

Will AI replace automation engineer?

AI is transforming automation engineering by enabling more advanced and efficient systems, but it is not expected to fully replace automation engineers. Instead, automation engineers will need to adapt by developing skills in AI, machine learning, and programming to work alongside AI tools and maintain complex automation processes.

What are careers in automation?

Careers in automation involve designing, developing, and maintaining systems that operate with minimal human intervention, such as industrial robots, control systems, and software automation tools. These roles often require knowledge of programming, engineering, and control systems, and may involve working with technologies like PLCs, SCADA, or robotics. Automation professionals typically work in manufacturing, technology, or process industries and may need certifications or technical training.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals working in machine automation, and how can they be addressed?

Professionals in machine automation frequently encounter challenges such as integrating new automation technologies with legacy systems, ensuring consistent machine performance, and troubleshooting complex technical issues. Effective communication with multidisciplinary teams—including engineers, operators, and IT specialists—is essential for resolving these challenges. Continuous learning and staying updated on emerging technologies can also help automation professionals adapt to evolving industry standards and maintain efficient, safe operations.

Mechatronic Technician

Manufacturing & Worldwide Field Service  |  Fort Pierce, FL

About Graph-Tech USA

Graph-Tech USA is a leading manufacturer of industrial digital inkjet printing, RFID encoding, product tracking, and machine automation systems. Our equipment is installed worldwide across the card, RFID, labeling, packaging, and industrial printing industries. We're looking for a hands-on technician who enjoys building sophisticated machinery at our Fort Pierce, FL facility — and traveling internationally to install and support it at customer sites around the world.

Why This Role

•     Build equipment most technicians never get to touch — cutting-edge digital inkjet, RFID, and automation systems used by manufacturers worldwide.

•     Work across the full lifecycle: build it in our shop, install it in the field internationally, and keep it running.

What You'll Do

Manufacturing

•     Assemble custom industrial machinery from mechanical and electrical drawings.

•     Install and wire electrical panels, sensors, motors, servos, pneumatic components, and safety devices.

•     Build and test digital inkjet printing systems, RFID encoding systems, product tracking systems, and conveyor equipment.

•     Perform machine setup, calibration, and quality assurance testing prior to shipment.

•     Troubleshoot mechanical, electrical, and software issues during the build process.

•     Maintain accurate assembly and service documentation.

Field Installation & Service

•     Travel worldwide to install and commission equipment at customer facilities (approximately 20–50% travel; typically several days to two weeks per trip; occasional weekend travel).

•     Perform on-site machine startup, alignment, and production acceptance testing with the customer.

•     Train customer operators and maintenance personnel.

•     Diagnose and repair mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, and automation issues in the field.

•     Perform preventive maintenance and system upgrades.

•     Represent Graph-Tech USA professionally while providing technical support to customers.

What You'll Need

•     Associate degree or technical certification in Mechatronics, Electrical Engineering Technology, Industrial Automation, or a related field — or equivalent hands-on experience.

•     Experience assembling industrial machinery or automation equipment.

•     Ability to read mechanical drawings, electrical schematics, and wiring diagrams.

•     Strong mechanical aptitude with experience using standard machine shop and assembly tools.

•     Good computer skills, including Microsoft Windows and Microsoft Office.

•     Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to interact professionally with customers.

•     Fluency in English.

•     Valid driver's license and ability to obtain a passport.

•     Ability to lift up some weight and work in an industrial manufacturing environment; ability to travel internationally by air.

Nice to Have

•     Knowledge of PLCs, motion control, sensors, industrial networking, and machine automation.

•     Experience with servo systems, pneumatics, and vision systems.

•     Familiarity with digital printing, RFID, or labeling equipment.

•     Spanish language skills. German, French, Italian, or Portuguese are also a plus.

You'll thrive here if you're self-motivated, comfortable working independently on-site, and genuinely curious about learning new technologies as our systems evolve.

What We Offer

•     Market Value Compensation

•     Paid vacation

•     Performance bonus opportunities.

•     Retirement plan

•     Paid travel expenses and per diem for field assignments.

•     Comprehensive product training.

•     The opportunity to work with cutting-edge industrial automation technology and customers around the world.
