Machine assistants play a key role in supporting efficient production processes and workplace safety. Their responsibilities may vary depending on the industry and the type of machinery they work with.

What is the difference between Machine Assistant vs Machine Operator?

AspectMachine AssistantMachine Operator

This individual will be responsible for repairing and maintaining molds, as well as creating precision equipment replacement parts to support our production processes. The ideal candidate will possess strong machining skills, attention to detail, and the ability to troubleshoot and solve mechanical issues to minimize downtime and ensure continuous production. Additionally, this role will require occasional international travel for training with master mold technicians, the opportunity to lead a team, and to spearhead the development of a new manufacturing repair area, integrating advanced technologies and expanding operational capabilities.

Key Responsibilities:

· Mold Repair & Maintenance:

  • Perform in-depth repairs and maintenance on rubber molds, including welding, machining, and surface finishing to restore molds to operational specifications.
  • Inspect and assess molds to identify wear, damage, or areas requiring repair, ensuring mold longevity and consistent quality in rubber products.
  • Maintain and document repair history and work performed on each mold for future reference.

· Equipment Replacement Parts Fabrication:

  • Design, fabricate, and machine high-precision replacement parts for equipment and machinery in the facility.
  • Use manual lathes, mills, grinders, and other machining tools to produce parts in accordance with technical specifications.
  • Ensure replacement parts meet dimensional, tolerance, and quality standards to minimize equipment downtime.

· Troubleshooting & Problem Solving:

  • Work closely with the maintenance team to troubleshoot mechanical failures in molds and equipment, offering quick and effective solutions.
  • Assist with root cause analysis of breakdowns and failures to improve processes and reduce recurrence.

· Equipment Setup & Operation:

  • Set up, adjust, and operate machinery, including lathes, mills, grinders, and other machining tools, for the repair or production of molds and parts.
  • Maintain machine calibration and ensure proper operation for accurate production.

· Preventive Maintenance:

  • Perform routine preventive maintenance on machinery and molds to ensure they are functioning optimally and proactively address potential issues before they cause disruptions.
  • Keep detailed records of maintenance activities.

· Collaboration & Communication:

  • Work closely with production, engineering, and quality teams to understand part and mold requirements.
  • Provide feedback and suggestions for improving mold and part designs, production processes, and maintenance strategies.

· International Travel for Training:

  • Travel internationally to receive specialized training and guidance from master mold technicians. This training will focus on advanced mold repair techniques and troubleshooting skills to ensure continuous improvement and high-quality production standards.
  • Adapt training concepts and new skills to improve operations and mold repair processes within the facility.

· Leadership of Repair Team:

  • Lead and supervise a team of machinists and maintenance personnel within the repair area to ensure efficient, high-quality work.
  • Provide guidance, mentorship, and on-the-job training to team members to enhance skills and performance.
  • Oversee the daily operations of the repair area, ensuring work is completed on time, within specifications, and aligned with safety standards.
  • Coordinate workload and resources effectively to maximize efficiency and minimize downtime.

· Development of Manufacturing Repair Area:

  • Lead the development and implementation of a new manufacturing repair area dedicated to mold repairs and the fabrication of replacement parts.
  • Integrate advanced technologies, such as automation or other relevant tools, to enhance the repair process, increase efficiency, and improve the quality of molds and parts.
  • Establish and expand the facility’s capabilities, ensuring the repair area meets current and future production demands.
  • Collaborate with management and engineering teams to identify technology needs and oversee the installation and setup of new equipment.
  • Train and mentor other team members in the new technologies and repair techniques to ensure a skilled workforce in the new repair area.
Requirements:

Skills & Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent; completion of an apprenticeship or technical training in machining is preferred.
  • Proven experience 5 years in machining, mold repair, and fabrication, preferably in a manufacturing environment.
  • Experience leading or supervising a team of machinists or maintenance personnel.
  • Proficiency in using manual lathes, mills, grinders, and other machining tools.
  • Strong knowledge of blueprints, schematics, and technical drawings.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical documents such as part specifications and repair instructions.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to produce high-quality, precise parts.
  • Good problem-solving skills and the ability to think critically under pressure.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to collaborate effectively with team members.
  • Ability and willingness to travel internationally for training and skill development.
  • Experience in developing or upgrading manufacturing repair areas, including incorporating new technologies and improving operational capabilities, is a plus.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, and lift for extended periods.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds as required.
