Job description

SUMMARY

This position performs assigned labor tasks to assist in proper course and grounds maintenance of outside areas at the Grand Traverse Resort and Spa.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Manual labor which includes but is not limited to shoveling, raking, pushing a lawn mower, planting flowers, trimming trees and shrubs, etc.
  • Safe and proper operation of power or manual equipment to complete assigned tasks
  • Ability to work with others as a team to achieve the common goal of assigned tasks
  • All weekends required
  • 40 hours per week
  • Digging  holes and trenches on grounds
  • Laying sod
  • Cutting cups regularly
  • Hand watering of turf
  • Edging cart paths, side walks and curbs
  • Edging bunkers and pulling weeds in bunkers
  • Other bunker work including, adding sand, redistributing sand, pushing up sand
  • Fly mowing bunker faces and ledges
  • String trimming
  • Leaf removal/clean up and trash pick up
  • Report to work on time and complete all scheduled shifts
  • Attend monthly safety meetings and any pre-scheduled department meetings
  • Assist other departments when requested
  • Help train other employees on certain job tasks when necessary
  • Must understand and abide by environmental practices of the Grand Traverse Resort and Spa
  • Good rapport with fellow employees and reflect a positive attitude
  • Complete all assignments requested of you
  • Must follow proper grooming and dress standards set forth by the Employee Handbook
  • Maintain open line of communication with your direct supervisor

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE

Must be at least 18 years of age.  No prior experience is necessary.  Similar previous experience and previous work in outdoor conditions is a plus. 

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES

The ability to pick up new tasks with proper training and being able to complete job assignments without direct supervision for most of the day is essential.  Must have excellent customer service and communication skills.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES (If applicable)

The employee may be depended on to lead other employees to get assignments completed while working with other co-workers as a team when direct supervisors are unable to stay with the task to be completed.

TYPICAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Manual labor is a part of the daily job assignment.  The ability to withstand extended hours of shoveling, raking, holding and operating a gas powered string trimmer and working on your knees may be asked of you on any day.  Extended hours of sitting on rough riding power equipment may be necessary to complete your job task.  Frequent bending to work on the ground and lifting of things off the ground will be necessary to complete some of your job tasks.

The ability to lift awkward objects weighing up to 60 pounds and sometimes more, from the ground to at least waist high is required.

Safety sensitive – use of power equipment such as lawn mowers, including riding lawn mowers, and power string trimmers.

TYPICAL MENTAL DEMANDS

The employee must be able to understand that last minute requests and changes to their assignments will occur periodically during his or her employment.  The employee must be able to adapt to these changes to address the new priorities.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Working in outdoor conditions to the different seasons of Northern Michigan is a must.  Cold, heat, dry, wet, wind and cloudy and sunny days.  Must practice all safety policies, procedures, and standards as set by OSHA.   Must be ready and willing to work in the very early morning.  Standard start times will generally be between 6:00 a.m. and 7:00 a.m.  Working some weekends may be necessary.

COMMENTS

Native American Preference will apply.  Must be able to pass a background investigation and a drug screen as a condition of employment.  Must be able to work flexible hours and take on additional responsibilities when asked.  Must adhere to company policies regarding strict confidentiality.
