What is a Luthier job?

A luthier is a craftsperson who builds, repairs, and restores stringed musical instruments, such as guitars, violins, and cellos. They use specialized woodworking techniques to shape, assemble, and finish instruments to achieve optimal sound quality. Luthiers may work independently, for instrument manufacturers, or in repair shops. Skills in woodworking, acoustics, and fine craftsmanship are essential for this profession. Many luthiers also provide custom modifications and setup services for musicians.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Luthier position, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Luthier, you need strong woodworking skills, knowledge of musical instrument construction, and an understanding of acoustics, typically supported by specialized apprenticeships or coursework. Familiarity with precision hand and power tools, finishing materials, and sometimes computer-aided design (CAD) systems is essential. Attention to detail, patience, and effective communication with musicians are valuable soft skills in this role. These competencies ensure the creation and repair of high-quality stringed instruments that meet both functional and artistic standards.

What types of instruments does a Luthier typically work on, and what are some common daily tasks in this role?

A Luthier most often works on stringed instruments such as guitars, violins, cellos, and occasionally other fretted or bowed instruments. On a typical day, you might be building a new instrument from raw materials, repairing damaged parts, setting up instruments for optimal playability, or finishing and polishing surfaces. Many Luthiers also interact directly with musicians to understand their unique needs and preferences, ensuring customized results. The work is usually performed in a workshop environment, requiring both independent focus and occasional teamwork, depending on the size of the shop. This blend of craftsmanship and customer service creates a dynamic work experience for those passionate about music and precise handiwork.

Job description

Luthier - Tier 1 (Early Career/Assistant Luthier)

Reports To: Shop Manager/Service Manager

Role Summary

Schmitt Music is seeking a Tier 1 Luthier to join the Paul A. Schmitt Violin Shop at our Bloomington, Minnesota headquarters. This entry-level role is designed for new graduates and early-career craftspeople who are passionate about orchestral string instruments and eager to build a long-term career in lutherie. The Tier 1 Luthier plays a key role in supporting students, educators, customers, and school music programs by helping ensure that violins, violas, cellos, and basses are properly set up, maintained, and prepared to Schmitt Music standards. This position combines hands-on craftsmanship, structured training, mentorship, and collaboration with Schmitt Music's core values: Serve Your Customer, Do What's Right, and Continuous Improvement.

Why Schmitt Music

For more than 125 years, Schmitt Music has existed for one purpose: to enrich lives by helping people make music. As a family-owned company and one of the region's leading music retailers and service providers, we support thousands of students, educators, families, and musicians each year. The Paul A. Schmitt Violin Shop is an important part of that mission. Our orchestral string team supports beginning students, advancing players, educators, and professional musicians through high-quality instruments, expert setup, and trusted repair service.

Every instrument that leaves a Schmitt Music bench supports a student's first lesson, a school orchestra's success, or a musician's next performance. We invest in luthiers the same way we invest in music education: for the long term.
