Pediatric Hospitalist Positions at Lurie Children's in Chicago

The Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children's Hospital of Chicago and the Division of Hospital-Based Medicine are seeking board eligible/board certified pediatricians at the level or rank of Instructor or Assistant Professor to join a growing team of over 85 pediatric hospitalists.

Clinical Activities Across the Division of Hospital-Based Medicine:
Pediatric hospitalists in the Division of Hospital-Based Medicine provide clinical services at the Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children's Hospital of Chicago (Main Campus), Lurie Children's Immediate Care Center, Northwestern Prentice Women's Hospital and the Shirley Ryan AbilityLab.

At Lurie Children's, hospitalist faculty lead several general inpatient pediatric hospitalist services (both teaching and non-teaching), a general pediatric consulting service, provide sedation for medical imaging studies and support front-line clinical care in both the pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) and neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). The inpatient, ICU-based teams also cover the hospital-wide Critical Assessment Team. Across all teams, one rewarding aspect of working at Lurie Children's is providing clinical care alongside one's colleagues in shared workrooms that enable frequent collaboration.
Hospitalist faculty also staff the Lurie Children's Immediate Care Center, providing ambulatory, acute care at family friendly hours. In this setting, faculty have the opportunity to work alongside their colleagues, precept pediatric residents and provide high-quality, ambulatory acute care to patients in the Chicago community.

At Prentice Women's Hospital, hospitalist faculty lead several newborn nursery teams (both teaching and non-teaching), a delivery room / consultative team, and support front-line clinical care in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU).

At Shirley Ryan AbilityLab, hospitalist faculty provide pediatric consultations for the physical medicine and rehabilitation team at this state-of-the-art, inpatient pediatric rehabilitation facility. Team members also facilitate communication with subspecialists to support the care of patients at Shirley Ryan AbilityLab.

Positions Available:

Full-time and part-time pediatric hospitalist positions are available at Lurie Children's Hospital and Lurie Children's Immediate Care Center. Positions exclusively on the inpatient, general pediatric hospitalist teams (day+night roles and nighttime only roles) as well as positions that combine activities across areas can be designed in order to tailor the mix of clinical activities to the unique interests of each candidate.

Position Details:

  • Full time faculty in the Division of Hospital-Based Medicine provide 1800 hours of clinical service per year.
  • Clinical schedules are published in several month increments and there are frequent shift trades within the group to ensure faculty can adjust their clinical schedules when needed.
  • Lurie Children's utilizes the Epic electronic health record system.
  • Academic appointments for faculty are through the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. Appointment will be commensurate with the academic accomplishments of the candidate.
  • Pediatric Hospital Medicine fellowship or certification is not required for this position.

Benefits:
Faculty in Hospital-Based Medicine at Lurie Children's receive competitive pay including malpractice, medical, dental and vision insurance. In addition, as a non-profit organization, Lurie Children's is a qualified employer for the Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program. The 403B (retirement) plan has a highly competitive employer contribution component as well. Continuing Medical Education monies are allotted at $2750/year for full-time faculty.

Faculty in the Division of Hospital-Based Medicine are deeply involved across Lurie Children's, Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine and the local and global communities in our organizational mission to achieve a healthier future for every child. Many hospitalist faculty are leaders in education, advocacy, quality improvement, health equity, clinical informatics and scholarship.

Education:
In addition to clinical teaching, many faculty regularly facilitate Problem Based Learning or Medical Clinical Skills courses at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. There are abundant opportunities to be involved in teaching undergraduate and graduate medical trainees and numerous mentors and educational leaders in the Division of Hospital-Based Medicine.

Chicago is fantastic with a broad range of amenities offered to make it a wonderful place to live. Lurie Children's Hospital is across the street from the Museum of Contemporary Art and just steps away from the Magnificent Mile on Michigan Avenue. There are outstanding museums, theaters, concerts, zoos and major league sports teams. Lake Michigan and the cityside beaches are serene in the winter and vibrant in the summer with outdoor recreation activities. The restaurant scene is thriving. Faculty can choose to live in any number of wonderful neighborhoods within the city proper, or in the numerous, beautiful surrounding suburbs.

Candidates:
Applicants interested in careers in Academic Hospital Medicine, as well as applicants interested in spending shorter periods in Hospital Medicine before entering fellowships in Pediatric Subspecialties such as Neonatology and Pediatric Critical Care are welcome to apply. These positions offer opportunities to work with pediatric residents, medical students and advanced practice providers. Academic rank will be commensurate with scholarly activity to date.
