The Opportunity:
As a Lumber Grader, you'll play a critical role in ensuring that our lumber meets the highest standards of quality. You'll inspect, grade, and sort lumber based on established criteria, helping us maintain our reputation for excellence. If you're detail-oriented, enjoy hands-on work, and have a good understanding of wood properties, this job at our sawmill in Conway, SC, might just be for you! This role is a full-time permanent position working Monday-Friday 6:00pm-6:00am.
What you will do as a Lumber Grader:
  • Examine lumber for defects such as knots, splits, and warping, and determine its grade based on industry standards.
  • Assign grades to lumber pieces according to quality and usability guidelines.
  • Sort lumber into appropriate categories for processing, storage, or shipping.
  • Maintain accurate records of grades, quantities, and any issues identified during the grading process.
  • Ensure all graded lumber meets company and industry quality standards before it reaches customers.
  • Work closely with other team members, including quality control staff, to ensure consistent product quality.

Experience and skills that will help you stand out:
  • Previous experience in lumber grading or a similar role in the wood products industry is a plus.
  • High school diploma or equivalent. Additional training or certification in lumber grading is a bonus.
  • Strong attention to detail and the ability to identify and assess wood defects and qualities.
  • Good understanding of lumber grades, species, and quality standards.
  • Ability to work in a physically demanding environment, including lifting heavy objects, standing for long periods, and working in various weather conditions.
  • Good communication skills and the ability to work well with others.
