What is an LTL dispatcher?

An LTL Dispatcher is a logistics professional responsible for coordinating and managing the transportation of Less-Than-Truckload (LTL) freight shipments. Their duties include scheduling pickups and deliveries, assigning drivers, optimizing routes, and ensuring compliance with regulations. LTL Dispatchers serve as a key communication link between shippers, drivers, and customers to ensure timely and efficient movement of goods. They also handle shipping documentation and address any issues that may arise during transit.

What does an LTL dispatcher do?

An LTL Dispatcher plays a crucial role in managing communication between drivers and warehouse teams. They regularly update drivers on route changes, delivery schedules, and any urgent issues, while also working closely with warehouse staff to confirm freight readiness and loading priorities. Effective dispatchers use transportation management systems to track shipments and resolve delays, helping to maintain customer satisfaction and optimize delivery routes. Strong collaboration and clear, timely communication are essential to overcoming the fast-paced challenges common in LTL operations.

What skills and qualifications are needed to be an LTL dispatcher?

To thrive as an LTL (Less-than-Truckload) Dispatcher, you need strong organizational skills, logistics knowledge, and often a background in transportation or supply chain management. Familiarity with transportation management systems (TMS), route optimization software, and basic understanding of DOT regulations is typically required. Excellent communication, problem-solving, and multitasking abilities help you handle changing schedules and coordinate effectively with drivers and customers. These skills are crucial to ensure timely, cost-effective deliveries and smooth operations in the fast-paced freight industry.

What is the difference between Ltl Dispatcher vs Freight Coordinator?

AspectLtl DispatcherFreight Coordinator
CredentialsHigh school diploma, CDL preferred, logistics certificationsHigh school diploma, logistics or supply chain certifications beneficial
Work EnvironmentTransportation offices, dispatch centers, on-callOffice settings, customer service, coordination roles
Industry UsageFreight, trucking, logistics companiesSupply chain, logistics, freight companies
Primary FocusScheduling drivers, routing, tracking shipmentsManaging freight shipments, customer communication, documentation

While both roles are vital in logistics, an Ltl Dispatcher primarily focuses on scheduling and routing freight shipments, whereas a Freight Coordinator manages overall shipment coordination and customer communication. Understanding these differences helps in choosing the right career path or job search focus within the logistics industry.

How much do Ltl dispatchers make?

Ltl dispatchers typically earn between $40,000 and $70,000 annually, depending on experience, location, and company size. They coordinate freight shipments, use transportation management systems, and often work full-time schedules, sometimes including weekends or evenings.

Is it hard to get hired as an Ltl Dispatcher?

Getting hired as an LTL dispatcher can be competitive, but having relevant experience in logistics, transportation, or dispatching software can improve your chances. Strong organizational skills, knowledge of freight regulations, and the ability to handle multiple priorities are important for success in this role.

Job description

Director, LTL & Truckload | Cargomatic

Employment Type: Full-Time | On-Site | Experienced

Compensation: $150,000 -$180,000 depending on experience, skills, and location.

About the role
Cargomatic moves freight across full truckload, over-the-road, local, and LTL. This role owns how that freight gets moved. You will run daily transportation operations across every mode, keep carriers compliant and capacity covered, and own execution from awarded freight through on-time delivery. You will also price FTL and LTL opportunities as they come up, so a strong operator who can read a lane and build a smart quote will do well here. You will work across sales, dispatch, compliance, and customer service, and you will be the person accountable when freight has to move clean and on time.

What you will own
Transportation operations. Run daily operations for FTL, OTR, local, and LTL across multiple accounts, from awarded freight through final delivery. This is the core of the seat.
Carrier procurement and negotiation. Negotiate rates with asset-based carriers and third-party providers to protect margin without giving up service, and keep capacity covered when lanes tighten.
Carrier network and compliance. Own onboarding end to end: contracts, insurance verification, FMCSA and safety review, operating authority, W-9, and system setup. Keep an approved network of qualified carriers and brokers current on insurance, authority, safety ratings, and customer requirements.
Customer implementation. Move new accounts from awarded business to live operations, and own the handoff so nothing drops in the transition.
Cross-functional execution. Coordinate sales, operations, dispatch, compliance, and customer service so booking and delivery move as one flow. Resolve exceptions, service failures, claims, and escalations before they reach the customer.
Pricing support. Price FTL and LTL opportunities as they arise, reading lane history, market conditions, fuel, accessorials, and carrier capacity to build quotes that win and hold margin. Support RFQs, spot quotes, and bid requests, and lend pricing input on RFPs. Pricing is a piece of the job rather than the center of it. You still need to build a sound quote when a lane calls for one.
Systems and performance. Use the TMS, load boards, and carrier management platforms to optimize capacity and service. Own the KPIs that matter here: on-time pickup and delivery, carrier performance, cost per mile, and gross margin, and use them to drive process improvement rather than just report it.
What you bring

Required:
7+ years in freight brokerage or transportation operations, including 3+ years in a leadership or senior role owning day-to-day execution and margin.
Deep operational command across FTL, OTR, local, and LTL, with a track record moving freight reliably across multiple accounts.
Carrier procurement and rate negotiation experience with asset-based carriers and 3PLs.
Working command of carrier compliance: FMCSA, operating authority, insurance verification, and safety ratings.
Comfort pricing FTL and LTL freight: lane analysis, market rates, accessorials, fuel, and capacity. You will not live in pricing, though you need to build a sound quote when a lane calls for one.
Proficiency in a TMS and load boards (DAT, Truckstop, or equivalent), plus strong Excel and data fluency.
Demonstrated cross-functional leadership across sales, operations, dispatch, and customer service.

Preferred:

  • LTL-specific depth: class-based rating, NMFC, and tariff work.
  • Experience in a tech-enabled or digital brokerage, comfortable working inside evolving tools rather than waiting on a finished system.
  • A history of building or improving pricing processes, playbooks, or tooling rather than running them as handed to you.
  • Enterprise customer implementation and onboarding experience.

Benefits

  • Competitive medical, dental, and vision coverage.
  • 401(k) plan with company match.
  • Generous paid time off including vacation, sick time, and company holidays.
  • Employee assistance program and wellness resources.
  • Opportunities for professional growth and career development.
  • Collaborative, people-first culture focused on safety, compliance, and continuous improvement.
