What is an LPN IV Therapy?

An LPN IV Therapy job involves a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) who is trained and authorized to administer intravenous (IV) therapy. These professionals start and manage IV lines, administer medications and fluids, and monitor patient responses. They work under the supervision of registered nurses (RNs) or physicians in hospitals, clinics, and long-term care facilities. Requirements vary by state, as some require additional certification for LPNs to perform IV therapy.

What kinds of patients and cases does an LPN IV Therapy typically work with?

LPNs specializing in IV therapy often work with patients who require intravenous fluids, medications, or nutrition, which can include those recovering from surgery, undergoing cancer treatments, or managing chronic illnesses. You’ll encounter a mix of routine and complex cases, such as administering antibiotics, chemotherapy, or hydration therapy in settings like hospitals, infusion centers, or long-term care facilities. This role frequently involves collaborating with RNs, physicians, and pharmacy staff to ensure proper medication management and infusion safety. Most shifts require balancing clinical duties with patient education and support, making adaptability and teamwork essential to success.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the LPN IV Therapy position, and why are they important?

To thrive as an LPN IV Therapy, you need a valid LPN license, solid knowledge of IV therapy protocols, and hands-on skills in venipuncture and medication administration. Certification in IV therapy and experience with infusion pumps and electronic health records (EHRs) are usually required. Strong attention to detail, excellent communication, and the ability to provide compassionate patient care set standout candidates apart. These competencies are crucial for ensuring safe, accurate IV therapy and maintaining high standards of patient care.
