What is an LPC hospital?

An LPC (Licensed Professional Counselor) in a hospital provides mental health support to patients dealing with emotional, psychological, and behavioral challenges. They assess, diagnose, and create treatment plans, often working with medical teams to ensure holistic care. LPCs in hospitals may also provide crisis intervention, therapy, and support for patients and families coping with trauma, medical conditions, or mental health disorders.

What are typical daily responsibilities of an LPC working in a hospital environment?

Licensed Professional Counselors (LPCs) working in hospitals usually provide individual and group counseling, conduct mental health assessments, and develop treatment plans for patients with varying needs. They often work closely with psychiatrists, physicians, nurses, and social workers to create comprehensive care strategies. Their day may also include crisis intervention, coordinating care post-discharge, and participating in case conferences. This dynamic setting offers exposure to diverse patient populations and allows LPCs to make a significant impact within a collaborative care team.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the LPC hospital position, and why are they important?

To thrive as an LPC (Licensed Professional Counselor) in a hospital setting, you need a master's degree in counseling or a related field, active LPC licensure, and strong clinical assessment and intervention skills. Experience with electronic health records (EHRs), familiarity with behavioral health documentation standards, and crisis intervention certifications are often required. These skills ensure effective delivery of mental health care and seamless integration with the broader hospital care team.
