Job description

About the Park School
The Park School is a Pre-K to Grade 8 independent school in Brookline, MA, dedicated to excellence in education. The cornerstone of Park's program is academic excellence, combining high standards of scholarship with encouragement for each child to develop to their greatest potential. Our school community fosters a nurturing environment in which children develop curiosity, express creativity, appreciate the value of hard work and discipline, and experience the joy of learning. Park's faculty encourages each student to strive for intellectual, physical, and moral growth and to become a contributing member of the community.
The on-call substitute is a member of the school's lower division and reports to the lower division head. This on-call, 10-month position comes with the responsibility of working with faculty and staff to support the school's mission and curricular goals.
Responsibilities
  • Availability when needed, on campus during school hours (7:45 am - 3:45 pm) to fulfill any predetermined or as-needed coverage requirements
  • Availability to respond to last-minute requests for coverage
  • Collaborate with Divisional Administrative Assistants to fully understand, plan, and implement lesson plans while the teacher is absent
  • Flexible to adapt to different classrooms and student needs
  • Effective and respectful class management skills, an understanding of the social/emotional development of children, team-oriented, and exhibits an exceptional work ethic
  • Additional opportunities to participate in other areas, such as athletic coaching or working within our After School Programs
  • Establish and implement expectations for student safety, conduct, procedures, and routines consistent with Park School policies.
  • Assess student performance and engagement, including academics, behavior, and social-emotional needs, while communicating directly with students, colleagues, and families both formally and informally when necessary
  • Meaningfully integrate and supervise technologies into class lessons for student learning and growth
  • Complete administrative tasks and coverage duties as assigned (student supervision, attendance, reporting, documenting curriculum, event/activity coverage, including lunch/recess duties , etc.)
  • Utilize feedback and reflection to improve practice and performance
  • Ensure that respect for diversity, equity, and inclusion, social-emotional learning, and academic excellence are emphasized as core values of The Park School.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree required
  • Experience teaching Early Childhood
  • Demonstrated experience working in a culturally diverse community
  • Strong interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills
  • Experience in writing student comments, communications to parents, and other school-related documents
  • Creative problem-solving skills and a positive attitude that allows one to cooperate and collaborate effectively with others
  • Motivation for and interest in professional development
  • High integrity, professionalism, and confidentiality
  • The ability to effectively interpret, navigate, mediate, and resolve conflict in a timely manner.
  • Proficient or the ability to learn Google tools and other applications as adopted by the school, such as Veracross, Atlas etc.

Physical Requirements:
  • The ability to sit and stand uninterrupted for 30-minute periods of time.
  • The ability to regularly walk on and travel across variable surfaces (e.g. level flooring, stairs, turf, gravel, asphalt, etc.).
  • The ability to lead, supervise, and accompany students to all areas of the school campus (including all indoor and outdoor areas), including during day-to-day responsibilities and in case of emergency.
  • The ability to regularly stand, sit, crouch, and kneel down in order to support students.
  • The ability to work outdoors, year-round, in variable weather conditions.
  • The ability to lift and hold 15 lbs overhead.
  • The ability to occasionally transport (e.g., move or drag) 25 lbs.
  • The ability to maintain focus and composure in an energetic and, at times, loud environment.
