What is a locum?

Locums, short for 'locum tenens,' are medical professionals who temporarily fill in for other healthcare providers, such as doctors or nurses, when there are staffing shortages or during periods of leave. Locum positions can last from a few days to several months and are common in hospitals, clinics, and private practices. Working as a locum allows healthcare providers flexibility, the opportunity to work in diverse settings, and the potential to travel. Locums are often employed through staffing agencies and can help facilities maintain continuity of care for patients.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as a locum tenens physician?

To thrive as a Locum Tenens physician, you need a valid medical degree, active state licensure, and strong clinical competency in your specialty. Familiarity with various electronic health record (EHR) systems and up-to-date board certifications are commonly required. Flexibility, adaptability, and excellent communication skills help you integrate quickly into new teams and environments. These skills ensure you can provide high-quality patient care while efficiently adjusting to diverse healthcare settings.

What challenges do locum tenens professionals face when adapting to new healthcare settings?

Locum tenens professionals often encounter challenges such as quickly learning new electronic health record (EHR) systems, understanding different facility protocols, and integrating into established teams. Adapting to a new environment requires strong communication skills and flexibility, as each assignment may vary in terms of patient population, clinical expectations, and workplace culture. Building rapport with permanent staff and staying organized can help locums ease the transition and provide high-quality care from day one.

What is the difference between Locums vs Nurse Practitioners?

AspectLocumsNurse Practitioners

Work EnvironmentTemporary assignments in hospitals, clinics, or facilitiesPermanent or long-term roles in clinics, hospitals, or community settings
Employer & Industry UsageStaffing agencies, healthcare facilities for short-term coverageHospitals, clinics, private practices for ongoing patient care
Search & Comparison IntentTemporary staffing, short-term roles, flexible workPermanent or long-term clinical roles, patient care

In summary, Locums are temporary healthcare professionals filling short-term staffing needs, often through agencies, while Nurse Practitioners are permanent or long-term clinicians providing ongoing patient care with advanced training and certification.

Do locums make more money?

Locums, or temporary healthcare professionals, often earn higher hourly rates compared to permanent staff due to the temporary nature of their work and the need for specialized skills. However, their overall income can vary based on location, specialty, and demand, and they may not receive the same benefits as full-time employees. Factors such as certifications, experience, and the work environment also influence earning potential.

Which locums agency pays the most?

The highest-paying locums agencies typically offer competitive rates based on specialty, experience, and location. Agencies such as Staff Care, CompHealth, and Weatherby Healthcare are known for offering some of the top pay rates in the industry. However, pay can vary widely depending on the specific assignment and market demand.

Job description

Advanced Heart Failure Cardiologist | Weekend Locums | Atlanta, GA

Advanced Heart Failure Cardiologist – Atlanta, Georgia

Add consistent weekend coverage to your schedule while working with one of the country's leading advanced heart failure programs in the heart of Atlanta.

This is not a typical community cardiology assignment. You'll join an established, multidisciplinary Advanced Heart Failure team at a major 643-bed hospital with nationally recognized cardiovascular, transplant, LVAD, and ECMO programs.

Why Consider This Assignment?
  • Atlanta, GA – Work in one of the Southeast's most desirable and accessible metropolitan areas

  • Only 2–3 weekends per month

  • Friday 5:00 PM – Monday 7:00 AM

  • Work alongside another employed Heart Failure physician and APPs

  • Established Advanced Heart Failure and LVAD program

  • Inpatient-focused weekend coverage

  • No ICU coverage

  • EPIC EMR

  • Long-term locums potential

Schedule: 2–3 weekends per month
Hours: Friday at 5:00 PM through Monday at 7:00 AM
EMR: EPIC

The locums physician will provide weekend coverage for Advanced Heart Failure patients, including LVAD patients, and respond to calls from the ED and inpatient floors. ICU coverage is not required.

Weekend census averages approximately 80–90 patients across the service, with coverage shared alongside an employed Heart Failure physician and APP team.

Requirements
  • Board Certification required

  • Active Georgia medical license

  • BLS

  • Active DEA

  • Minimum 5 years of specialty experience

  • Advanced Heart Failure experience

Why Atlanta?

Enjoy a schedule that allows you to experience Atlanta without committing to a traditional Monday–Friday locums assignment. The position is located in the Buckhead area, putting you near some of Atlanta's best dining, shopping, hotels, entertainment, and neighborhoods while remaining easily accessible from Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport.

For an Advanced Heart Failure physician who wants to stay clinically active, work with a sophisticated cardiovascular program, and add 2–3 weekends per month without disrupting a weekday schedule, this is a compelling way to do it.
