What is a Locum Remote Electrical Engineer?

A Locum Remote Electrical Engineer is a qualified electrical engineer who works on a temporary or contract basis, often filling in for permanent staff or handling specialized projects. The 'remote' aspect means they perform their work from a location outside the client’s premises, using digital tools to collaborate with teams and manage projects. Their duties can involve designing electrical systems, troubleshooting issues, providing technical advice, or supporting installations. This flexible arrangement allows companies to access specialized expertise when needed without long-term commitments. Locum roles can range from a few days to several months, depending on project requirements.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Locum Remote Electrical Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Locum Remote Electrical Engineer, you need a solid grounding in electrical engineering principles, a relevant degree, and professional registration or licensure. Familiarity with CAD software, simulation tools like MATLAB or ETAP, and remote collaboration platforms is typically required. Strong problem-solving skills, self-motivation, and clear communication are crucial for excelling in a remote and often project-based environment. These skills ensure effective project delivery, compliance with technical standards, and seamless collaboration across distributed teams.

What are some common challenges faced by locum remote electrical engineers, and how can they be managed?

Locum remote electrical engineers often encounter challenges such as quickly adapting to new project teams, understanding unfamiliar systems, and maintaining effective communication across distances. Successfully managing these challenges involves being proactive about onboarding, asking clarifying questions, and leveraging digital collaboration tools to stay connected with team members. Flexibility, strong organizational skills, and a willingness to learn new workflows are essential for thriving in this dynamic, project-based environment.

Job description

A Remote Electrical Hardware Design Engineer position is currently available through Belcan at one of our key US defense clients. We are seeking an experienced ECAD PCB Layout Designer with strong hands-on experience in Siemens Xpedition (7.9.6 or above). This role is focused on independent execution of PCB layout, not electrical design support. The candidate must be capable of taking designs from initial placement through routing and final release with minimal supervision.
Key Responsibilities:
Perform hands-on PCB layout using Siemens Xpedition
Execute full layout cycle: placement, routing, constraint management, and final release
Work with engineering teams to implement high-speed digital, RF, power, and mixed-signal designs
Apply and manage design constraints (impedance control, differential pairs, length matching, stackups)
Generate fabrication outputs (Gerber/ODB++, drawings, documentation)
Conduct and support layout design reviews
Resolve layout-related issues and drive design to completion
Required Qualifications:
5+ years of hands-on PCB layout experience (not just support or review)
Strong proficiency in Siemens Xpedition (Placement, Routing, Constraint Manager)
Proven experience completing full board layouts independently
Experience with one or more:
High-speed digital designs
RF layouts
Power supply / high-current layouts
Rigid-flex designs
Strong understanding of DFM, signal integrity, and power integrity fundamentals
Compensation:
We provide a competitive pay and benefits package. This position is offering a salary rate of $115,000-135,000, however, Belcan considers several factors when extending an offer, including but not limited to education, experience, geographic location, and discipline. Benefits offered may include health care, dental, vision, life insurance; 401(k); education assistance; paid time off including PTO, holidays, and any other paid leave required by law.
Belcan is an equal opportunity employer. Your application and candidacy will not be considered based on race, color, sex, religion, creed, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, disability, genetic information, pregnancy, veteran status or any other characteristic protected by federal, state or local laws.
