Responsibilities

The locksmith installs, services, and maintains commercial and residential locks, handles vehicle-entry lockouts, copies keys, re-keys locks, picks locks, cuts keys to code, creates automotive keys, and programs transponders.

The role moves between commercial and residential lock service, vehicle-entry lockouts, key work, and automotive transponder programming. A field locksmith must identify the lock type, choose the correct service method, complete the repair or key task, and document the visit through timesheets, service tickets, and inventory records.

Colorado Security Products also expects the locksmith to drive to service locations efficiently, respond to scheduled on-call work, follow safety procedures, and perform additional duties assigned by the company.

Established locksmith trade work includes key cutting, lock repair, master key maintenance, door hardware installation, and electronic access installation, as detailed in the O*NET locksmith profile.

Commercial and residential assignments require knowledge of lock mechanisms, key equipment, and safe locks. Automotive work adds vehicle-entry lockouts, automotive key creation, and transponder programming. Electronic knowledge is helpful but not required, and the position includes customer-service and customer-acquisition interaction during service calls.

Service documentation remains part of the field routine. Timesheets, service tickets, inventory, and customer explanations keep each visit connected to the company's operations.

The technician also reads wiring diagrams, blueprints, and business documentation when the work involves security electronics or a related system.

Qualifications

A current driver's license and clean driving record are required.

The employer requires a neat and professional appearance, reliability, organization, self-motivation, and strong interpersonal skills.

The locksmith must understand lock mechanisms, key equipment, safe locks, and automotive locks, with electronic knowledge helpful but not required.

The employer identifies good physical health as part of the qualification profile.

Work Schedule

Regular hours run from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on weekdays, with some Saturday work.

Scheduled on-call services add assignments outside ordinary weekday hours.
