What does a Localization Manager do?
A Localization Manager oversees the adaptation of content, products, or services for different languages and cultures, ensuring they resonate with local audiences. They coordinate translation efforts, manage localization teams and vendors, and ensure linguistic and cultural accuracy. Additionally, they work closely with product, marketing, and engineering teams to streamline workflows and maintain quality across global markets. Their role is crucial for businesses expanding internationally, ensuring that content is both linguistically accurate and culturally appropriate.
What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Localization Manager position, and why are they important?
To thrive as a Localization Manager, you need expertise in translation management, project coordination, and fluency in one or more foreign languages, often supported by a degree in linguistics, localization, or a related field. Familiarity with computer-assisted translation (CAT) tools, localization management platforms (like Smartling or memoQ), and knowledge of internationalization standards is commonly required. Outstanding communication, cultural sensitivity, and problem-solving abilities set top candidates apart in this role. These skills and qualities are essential to manage complex localization projects, deliver culturally accurate content, and ensure seamless collaboration across multinational teams.
What are some common challenges faced by Localization Managers, and how do they address them?
Localization Managers frequently encounter challenges such as tight deadlines, managing multiple language projects simultaneously, and ensuring cultural accuracy across diverse markets. To handle these, they develop strong workflows, leverage advanced localization technologies, and build close relationships with in-country reviewers and linguistic vendors. Proactive communication and flexibility are key in overcoming unexpected changes or feedback from internal stakeholders. These skills help ensure that projects are delivered on time and that localized content resonates with each target audience.

About the Team
The French Localization team defines how Capital One communicates with our francophone audiences. We bridge the gap between English source content and culturally resonant French experiences through our end-to-end localization process. We apply human expertise and automation to produce accurate, on-brand French content that complies with regional standards and language laws.
About the Role
In this highly collaborative role, the French Localization Specialist is responsible for ensuring that French internal communications and customer-facing touchpoints are grammatically correct, consistent, accurate, adhere to our editorial style guide and brand guidelines, and have been reviewed and approved by the necessary stakeholders. This role is a key resource within Capital One's French localization hub, supporting globalization efforts across various teams and content types, including internal and HR communications and systems for French-Canadian associates, and customer-facing materials for francophones across Canada.
Your Responsibilities:
The role involves collaborating with members of the Creative Solutions team and peers across the business, including HR, Enterprise-level stakeholders, legal, brand, intent and product owners, to help facilitate the delivery of quality, error-free French experiences. This includes:
Providing high-quality French translations and localization of English content, collaborating with the process team and external language service providers when required.
Revising French content to ensure consistency with brand standards, editorial guidelines and guidance from legal and compliance.
Reviewing French experiences to ensure alignment with the English intent and Enterprise-level requirements.
Maintaining up-to-date knowledge of fast-evolving localization technology and industry standards.
Utilizing Trados Enterprise, our Translation Management System (TMS), for receiving, completing and delivering localization work.
Advocating internally for localization best practices and educating stakeholders on the value and importance of French content quality.
Advocating for the customer and ensuring that communications are delivered in plain language.
Maintaining a fundamental understanding of all products, marketing language, legal disclosures, and various types of Enterprise content (e.g., internal communications and systems).
Collaborating with business partners across the Enterprise to gather and integrate feedback, resolving conflicts/inconsistencies and addressing stakeholder concerns throughout all stages of development.
Being accountable for final approval of deliverables and a last review of the finished product.
Basic Qualifications:
4+ years of experience in localization/translation.
Excellent localization, translation, editing, and proofreading skills, with a strong command of Canadian French (grammar, punctuation and spelling).
Understanding of cultural nuances and regional variations within French-speaking Canada.
Knowledge of localization best practices for diverse content types.
Meticulous attention to quality and detail.
Strong technical acumen, including proficiency with TMSs (preferably Trados Enterprise) and machine translation tools, as well as working knowledge of Adobe Workfront and generative AI technology (e.g., Google Gemini).
