A Localization Manager oversees the adaptation of content, products, or services for different languages and cultures, ensuring they resonate with local audiences. They coordinate translation efforts, manage localization teams and vendors, and ensure linguistic and cultural accuracy. Additionally, they work closely with product, marketing, and engineering teams to streamline workflows and maintain quality across global markets. Their role is crucial for businesses expanding internationally, ensuring that content is both linguistically accurate and culturally appropriate.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a localization manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Localization Manager, you need expertise in translation management, project coordination, and fluency in one or more foreign languages, often supported by a degree in linguistics, localization, or a related field. Familiarity with computer-assisted translation (CAT) tools, localization management platforms (like Smartling or memoQ), and knowledge of internationalization standards is commonly required. Outstanding communication, cultural sensitivity, and problem-solving abilities set top candidates apart in this role. These skills and qualities are essential to manage complex localization projects, deliver culturally accurate content, and ensure seamless collaboration across multinational teams.

Proactive communication and flexibility are key in overcoming unexpected changes or feedback from internal stakeholders. These skills help ensure that projects are delivered on time and that localized content resonates with each target audience.

Job description

THE ROLE:

ProbablyMonsters is seeking a Localization Lead to own localization standards, terminology, and the quality bar across all titles and marketing. This is a hands-on role in Unreal Engine keeping content localization-ready, troubleshooting in-game, and holding the quality bar on all localized output. The ideal candidate brings strong Unreal fluency, experience managing vendor and client processes, and sound quality and aesthetic judgment. This is a full-time, on-site role located in Fort Worth, TX.

WHO YOU ARE:

  • You have sound quality and aesthetic judgment and take pride in setting and holding a high bar for localized content.
  • You are a clear, confident communicator who can align stakeholders across game teams, vendor partners, and cross-functional teams.
  • You lead through discipline, ownership and influence, comfortable being the point of contact for a specialized function across multiple game teams.
  • You are comfortable working directly in engine to catch issues before they reach players.
  • You are able to build and run processes that scale a quality bar across multiple products.
  • You collaborate naturally across disciplines, partnering with UI, engineering, and vendor teams to solve problems early rather than downstream.
  • You are adaptable and comfortable owning ambiguity in a dynamic environment, where roles and responsibilities can shift with business needs.

WHAT YOU WILL DO:

  • Serve as the primary point of contact for game teams on localization.
  • Set and maintain localization quality standards and establish and hold the quality bar on localized output.
  • Support kick-off alignment with stakeholders on process, target languages, budget forecast, and tooling before production localization begins.
  • Review UI designs early in production for localization-readiness, partnering directly with the UI team before string lock.
  • Work in Unreal Engine on string cleanup and review before vendor handoff, UI localization readiness evaluation, and in game troubleshooting.
  • Partner with the UI team to create fully localized shared components.
  • Manage vendor relationships and hand-offs, with production support.
  • Collaborate with Engineering on structural pipeline and tooling.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Current, hands-on Unreal Engine fluency: string tables, localization workflows, and UI localization readiness assessment.
  • Proven ability in localization for interactive content, including standards, terminology, and quality bar ownership.
  • Working knowledge of localization fundamentals: terminology and style guide management, text expansion and truncation, font and glyph coverage, RTL and CJK handling, and pseudo localization.
  • Ability to establish a quality bar across multiple products and put in place processes to attain it.
  • Ability to evaluate UI designs for localization readiness and give clear, actionable feedback to UI and design teams early in production.
  • Experience managing vendor relationships and client hand-offs.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with demonstrated ability to collaborate with game teams, vendor partners, and cross-functional stakeholders.

PREFERRED SKILLS:

  • Experience leading localization across multiple shipped titles.
  • Experience owning a discipline or quality bar as a senior individual contributor.
  • Experience editing text in UMG widgets and other game content.
