Job description

AIP is looking for a Laundry Operator to work in Batavia, NY. Works under the supervision of the Laundry Lead. The Laundry/Tailor position will act independently or assist in the performance of any and all duties necessary to keep the facility in full operation. Will perform other duties as assigned.

Responsibilities
The duties listed below are not set forth for purposes of limiting the assignment of work. They should not be construed as a complete list of the various duties normally performed by the individuals assigned to the Support Services department or those to be performed temporarily outside an employee's normal line of work.
  • Sizes, marks, alters and repairs clothing. Repairs or replaces defective garment parts such as snaps, zippers, buttons, buckles, pockets, pocket flaps, and coat linings. Shortens or lengthens sleeves or legs; expands or narrows waist and chest; raises or lowers collar; and sets sleeves to armholes.
  • Takes measurements from or fits garment to determine type and extent of cutting required, and marks garment accordingly.
  • Resews garment, using needle and thread or sewing machine.
  • Maintains adequate stock of supplies.
  • Monitors safety procedures of equipment and working area.
  • Operates one or more washing machines to wash household linens, garments, towels and other articles.
  • Manipulates valves, switches and levers to start and stop the machine and to control the amount and temperature of water for the soaping and rinsing of each batch; mixing and adding soap, bluing and bleaching solutions.
  • Loads and unloads the washer and drying machines.
  • Folding and sorting clean clothing and linens according to requirements.
  • Insures proper distribution back to pods.
  • Work is completed in a priority established by supervision or facility need.
  • All work will be completed with a high degree of professionalism, quality and craftsmanship.
  • Lulls in workload are used to maintain a clean and orderly work area and to ensure clerical tasks are up to date. Keeps up to date on departmental and facility safety standards and local codes and policies.

Qualifications
  • A high school diploma or GED is required.
  • (2) Two years supervisory experience. Computer experience a plus.
  • Must have inter/intra communication skills with employees and department heads. Must be able to follow Standard Codes of Conduct pertaining to interaction with detainee population.
  • May lift or push up to 50 lbs. For extended periods of time may be required to stand, walk, squat, kneel, sit, bend, reach and climb. Work may involve using ladders and lifts.
  • Work areas may include all areas of the warehouse or facility. May be exposed to industrial chemicals and solvents. Majority of work in air-conditioned facility.
  • Must be at least 21 years of age. Must be able to pass extensive background investigation and drug testing. Random drug testing will be performed.
