What is a local masonry worker?

Local masonry workers are skilled tradespeople who specialize in building structures using materials like brick, stone, and concrete within a specific geographic area or community. They construct and repair walls, chimneys, patios, walkways, and other stone or brickwork projects. Local masons often work on residential, commercial, or public projects and have knowledge of local building codes and climate considerations. Their expertise is essential for ensuring the durability, safety, and visual appeal of masonry structures.

What are some common challenges faced by local masons on construction sites?

Local masons often encounter challenges such as working in varying weather conditions, handling heavy materials, and maintaining precision with brick or stone placement to ensure structural integrity. Coordinating with other trades like carpenters and electricians is essential, especially when schedules overlap or site logistics are complex. Additionally, masons must adhere to safety protocols and building codes while managing tight project deadlines, which requires strong communication and problem-solving skills.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a local masonry professional, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Local Masonry professional, you need expertise in bricklaying, stone setting, and concrete work, often supported by apprenticeship training or trade certification. Familiarity with tools such as trowels, levels, mortar mixers, and safety equipment is important, along with knowledge of construction codes. Attention to detail, physical stamina, teamwork, and effective communication are valuable soft skills for this role. These skills ensure the structural integrity, quality, and timely completion of masonry projects while maintaining safety standards.

Job description

Masonry Crew Member

Blackjack Horticulture

Birmingham, AL | Full-Time

About Us

Blackjack Horticulture builds and maintains outdoor spaces our clients are proud of — from retaining walls and patios to walkways and stonework that stand the test of time. Our mission is making outdoor spaces a JOY, not a JOB. We're growing our crew and looking for hands-on, reliable people who take pride in quality craftsmanship.

What You'll Do

  • Build and repair hardscape features including retaining walls, paver patios, walkways, steps, and stone veneer
  • Read and follow project plans/blueprints for layout and grading
  • Mix and pour concrete, set stone/block, and finish surfaces to spec
  • Operate hand and power tools safely
  • Work alongside crew leads to keep projects on schedule and up to quality standards
  • Maintain a clean, safe job site and properly care for equipment/materials
  • Load/unload materials and assist with other landscape construction tasks as needed

What We're Looking For

  • Prior masonry, hardscaping, or construction experience preferred (not always required — willing to train the right person)
  • Ability to lift 75+ lbs and work outdoors in varying weather conditions
  • Reliable transportation and a valid driver's license (a plus)
  • Strong work ethic, attention to detail, and a team-first attitude
  • Willingness to learn and take direction on-site

What We Offer

  • Competitive pay based on experience
  • Steady, year-round work with a growing local company
  • Opportunities to grow into a crew lead role
