Job description

Job Description:
About the Team:
MarketWatch is seeking a Data & Visuals Journalist to uncover stories in data and bring them to life through compelling visual journalism.
About the Role
This role sits at the intersection of reporting, analysis and visual storytelling. The ideal candidate is as comfortable digging through datasets as they are creating charts, graphics and visual explainers that help readers understand what matters and why.
We are not looking for someone who simply visualizes data supplied by others. We are looking for a journalist who independently identifies compelling stories from the jobs report or a public filing or research report and uncovers trends and develops original reporting rooted in data.
The strongest candidates will bring curiosity, strong news instincts and a passion for helping readers better visualize money, markets and the economy.
This role is based in New York. Other locations will be considered based on merit.
You Will:
  • Identify, report and produce original stories driven by data.
  • Analyze economic, market, consumer and corporate datasets to uncover meaningful trends and insights.
  • Create charts, graphics, visual explainers and data-driven storytelling experiences that help readers quickly understand complex topics.
  • Collaborate with reporters and editors across MarketWatch coverage areas to strengthen enterprise, breaking-news and explanatory journalism.
  • Develop recurring visual franchises and data-driven features that become signature elements of MarketWatch coverage.
  • Contribute visual storytelling to major news events, live coverage and enterprise projects.
  • Help identify opportunities where data and visual journalism can elevate reporting and reader understanding.
  • Experiment with new storytelling formats, visualization techniques and AI-enabled reporting tools.
  • Ensure all work meets the highest standards of accuracy, clarity and journalistic integrity.
You Have:
  • 3+ years of experience in data journalism, visual journalism, explanatory reporting or a related field.
  • Strong reporting and news judgment skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze and interpret data independently.
  • Experience creating charts, graphics and other forms of visual storytelling.
  • Ability to translate complex topics into clear, engaging journalism.
  • Experience working with data-analysis and visualization tools.
  • Curiosity, creativity and a strong sense of audience needs.
  • Ability to work quickly and collaboratively in a fast-moving newsroom environment.
  • Familiarity with AI-enabled research, analysis and visualization tools is a plus.
Our Benefits
  • Comprehensive Healthcare Plans
  • Paid Time Off
  • Retirement Plans
  • Comprehensive Medical, Dental and Vision Insurance Plans
  • Education Benefits
  • Paid Maternity and Paternity Leave
  • Family Care Benefits
  • Commuter Transit Program
